Vice President of Member and Industry Engagement at National Hydropower Association (NHA)

I was honored to represent NHA at yesterday's 150th anniversary celebration of the Bowersock Mills & Power Company in Lawrence, Kansas. This loyal NHA member organization is a fantastic example of the longevity and the spirit of hydropower. Sarah Hill-Nelson and her father Stephen Hill are champions of clean energy and clean water, and they do it all while supporting and appreciating the people - in the past and in the present - making this hydro asset such a jewel in the state of Kansas.

  • It's almost December, which means NHA's California Regional Meeting is fast approaching! Taking place from December 10 - 11 in Redding, California, water power professionals from across #hydropower and pumped storage will have the opportunity to connect and learn alongside one another. Hosted by Pacific Gas and Electric Company and sponsored by 23 organizations, the California Regional Meeting provides a forum to address regional issues and location-specific challenges, as well as exploring topics top-of-mind for California’s water power community. This year’s meeting features two unique tour opportunities on December 11; first, attendees will have the chance to tour Bureau of Reclamation's Shasta Dam, and then in the afternoon, the location shifts to PG&E's Pit 1 Hydroelectric Project. • 📢 𝗘𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁! 📢 True or False? Hydropower requires a wider range of fields and expertise than most industries. True - Hydropower offers exciting challenges. It encompasses a wide range of fields and themes, including bespoke engineering, economics, social issues, water management, biodiversity, automation, and digitalization. Few industries require the breadth of expertise that hydropower needs.(ESMAP 2023).  #netzero #renewableenergy #futureoftheplanet #hydropower #climatechange

  • On Monday, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced nearly $15 million for nine research and development projects to increase #hydropower's ability to respond to changing demand on the electric grid. Hydro's flexibility helps balance the grid, and with an increasing amount of #renewables coming online, ensuring communities have access to reliable power is critical. The funding applies to three topic areas: - Demonstrations pairing hydro with another type of power generation or an energy storage technology - Technologies to improve the flexibility of the U.S. hydropower fleet - Ways to quantify the flexibility of hydropower, and operate facilities, to better serve evolving electricity grids To learn more about the $15 million in funding, follow the link: https://bit.ly/4fTUGZq

  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Rapid RUNNERS program, which received $15 million in funding over three years from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aims to help alleviate manufacturing strain on the industry while creating greater opportunity for domestic manufacturing. By utilizing additive manufacturing (3-D printing), as well as robotics and traditional machining techniques, the program will produce three runners - one for internal testing and two to be installed on Tennessee Valley Authority #hydropower projects. At the conclusion of the project, the industry could have a replicable platform to quickly produce large metal parts, ensuring hydro's many benefits face less downtime while continuing to support the energy needs of communities, as well as other #renewables. • NHA congratulates Chris Wright on his nomination to serve as U.S. Secretary of Energy in the incoming Trump Administration. We look forward to a continued partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to strengthen America’s energy dominance and continue to ensure a 24/7 reliable electricity grid. The Trump Administration will be taking the reins at a critical point for the water power industry, as roughly 40% of the non-federal hydropower fleet is at risk of premature retirement. Facilities generating nearly 16,000 MWs of firm and clean electricity capacity will have their licenses expire in the next decade. The Trump Administration should prioritize preserving and expanding the existing hydropower fleet by encouraging dam safety and environmental upgrades and streamlining the antiquated re-licensing process. Marine energy technologies, such as current, wave and tidal, also show great potential to enhance America’s energy independence.  For over 140 years, water power has helped fuel America’s economic prosperity. NHA is excited to work with Secretary-designee Wright and the new Congress to preserve and grow this vital domestic resource for generations to come.

  • 📢 𝗘𝗮𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗹 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘁! 📢 A recent World Bank report on gender equality in the hydropower sector identified there was a lack of awareness among women about opportunities in the hydropower sector.
