National Hydropower Association’s Post

Oak Ridge National Laboratory's (ORNL) Rapid RUNNERS program, which received $15 million in funding over three years from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aims to help alleviate manufacturing strain on the industry while creating greater opportunity for domestic manufacturing. By utilizing additive manufacturing (3-D printing), as well as robotics and traditional machining techniques, the program will produce three runners - one for internal testing and two to be installed on Tennessee Valley Authority #hydropower projects. At the conclusion of the project, the industry could have a replicable platform to quickly produce large metal parts, ensuring hydro's many benefits face less downtime while continuing to support the energy needs of communities, as well as other #renewables.
