National Plaintiffs' Law Association

Professional Organizations

NPLA is a group of current law students and alum, nationwide, working to promote plaintiff-side career paths.

About us

National Plaintiffs' Law Association is a group of current law students and alum dissatisfied with the control large defense-orientated law firms exercise over legal academia and the resulting culture at elite law schools. NPLA exists to support law students looking to become plaintiff-side attorneys. Comprised of law students from across the country, NPLA is a national resource and network for those passionate about practicing on behalf of plaintiffs. From Berkeley to Harvard, we have affiliated organizations on multiple campuses and are seeing a meaningful uptick in interest in plaintiff-side careers and perceptible changes in students’ perceptions of plaintiff-side attorneys. NPLA supports law students looking to become plaintiff-side attorneys. Comprised of law students nationwide, NPLA is a resource and network for those passionate about fighting for justice on behalf of plaintiffs. NPLA addresses the resource and opportunity gaps that exist for law students who want a career in plaintiff-side litigation.

The American Association for Justice's Law Schools Committee is excited to announce the first installment of our three-part webinar series on Plaintiff Firms Careers for law students, titled “Plaintiff Firm Careers 101: Getting Hired and Navigating Compensation” It will cover the topics below, and feature AAJ members from around the country. • Hear from Jessica Wieczorkiewicz on the fundamental choice between working at a defense firm and a plaintiff firm, and what sets plaintiff firms apart. Her firsthand experience with both sides will explain the differences between plaintiff and defense firms, including the types of cases handled, firm structure, and culture. • Next, Lance Oliver will discuss the key skills and experiences that plaintiff firms look for when hiring. As a member of his firm’s hiring committee, Lance will give tips on how to tailor your resume and cover letter to get to the interview stage. • Laura Yaeger will be discussing compensation packages at plaintiff firms, including salary, bonuses, and contingency-based compensation. She will also cover non-monetary compensation considerations like flexible work arrangements, professional development opportunities, and career growth. Moderated by AAJ Law School Committee members Jacob M. Morse and Jade Haileselassie, this webinar was created for law students who have an interest in plaintiff-side work and who want to learn more about life inside a plaintiff firm. They will also moderate a Q&A with the panelists at the end of the event. This complimentary webinar is just one of the benefits offered to law student members of AAJ -- register today, and start preparing for your career after graduation! https://lnkd.in/es87MQXb

J.D. Candidate at the University of Virginia School of Law

A week ago today, the Plaintiffs' Law Association at the University of Virginia (PLAVA) had its first meeting of the year, with over three dozen students in attendance! PLAVA's mission is to educate the UVA Law community on plaintiffs'-side work and to provide employment connections with the same. We're part of a wave of other schools, led by the National Plaintiffs' Law Association, in bringing plaintiffs' work to the forefront of law school experiences around the nation. Considering that we are only in our second year, it was extremely heartening to see so many students interested in learning more about plaintiffs' work either just for the knowledge or potentially for their careers. Thank you to everyone who attended, Professor Anthony Greene for speaking, and to the PLAVA Board for making it all happen! Please message me if you'd like to connect about opportunities with the organization.

Co-President | National Plaintiffs’ Law Association; J.D. Candidate | University of Texas School of Law

The National Plaintiffs' Law Association will be hosting our national plaintiff-side job fair from 11am-2pm CT this coming Monday, August 5th. We are asking all members of the plaintiffs' bar to support help make this practice more accessible to students by participating in this job fair. More information and registration instructions below. Over 40 plaintiff-side firms and over 200 bright and passionate students from law schools across the country have registered for this entirely virtual "open house" style fair. Participation is entirely free, registration takes under two minutes, and the only commitment required is to attend for the three hour open house block to field questions about your firm. Employers: even if you do not have an urgent hiring need, we strongly encourage you to attend and make your firm known to the next generation of plaintiffs' advocates. You never know who may refer you a case or who may be looking for a role when you're hiring several years down the line. Regardless, your participation directly supports a growing movement of students interested in plaintiffs' advocacy. Students: if you've ever been curious about careers on the plaintiff-side, this is the perfect opportunity for you to learn more. Employers have agreed to share candidly about the work they do, their compensation and career paths, and any other questions you may have. And if you're actively searching for a summer associate or first-year associate role, many of our participating firms have confirmed they intend to hire students they meet at the job fair. Link to registration in comments, feel free to comment or DM with any questions. Looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday!
