In 2019, the National Housing Strategy Act was passed in Canada. This committed the federal government to upholding the right to housing as it is defined in international human rights law. The National Right to Housing Network (NRHN) is a group of over 350 key leaders, organizations, subject matter experts, and people with lived experience of housing precarity and homelessness, with a shared mission to fully realize the right to housing for all and ultimately eliminate homelessness in Canada. Our Network is dedicated to ensuring that the right to housing in Canada is meaningfully implemented. We do this by: - Bringing together a network of civil society voices in a collective voice that speaks to the implementation of the right to housing; - Working with Governments to develop Canada’s right to housing architecture; - Identifying and testing solutions to systemic barriers in order to set precedents, address key gaps in the National Housing Strategy, and drive changes in housing policy and funding; - Exploring research on the right to housing; - Supporting community initiatives in order to build a housing rights culture in Canada; - Expanding the right to housing to provincial, territorial, and municipal jurisdictions.

OCASI - Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants Accessibility Initiative held a roundtable today, and I had the pleasure of joining on behalf of the National Right to Housing Network to discuss the right to housing and the role of the National Housing Strategy Act in advancing housing equality across Canada. Yesterday, I was speaking with a friend who just returned from the Netherlands. She described how different things are there (did you know that there is a social housing museum?!) and how housing is commonly understood as a fundamental human right by government and the public. I'm not saying that the Netherlands is perfect by any means, but it did reminded me how far behind we are here in Canada. I’m incredibly proud to be part of a this small, strong and deeply passionate team working tirelessly to change this by showing governments, partners, advocates, and the public how we can use human rights legislation like the National Housing Strategy Act to build laws, policies and programs genuinely aimed at ending homelessness and Canada's housing crisis. FACT: There is strong evidence that evictions have severe negative effects on young people. In addition to contributing to #homelessness, evictions lead to a range of harmful social, economic, and health issues, particularly for youth and children. On November 20, hundreds of renters and advocates from across Canada joined our National Panel Discussion to build a renter-led vision for a stronger Renters’ Bill of Rights. Key speakers from National Right to Housing Network, ACORN Canada, Accelerating Accessibility Coalition and National Association of Friendship Centres | Association nationale des Centres d'amitié discussed critical systemic housing issues related to affordability, displacement, accessibility, Indigenous housing, discrimination and access to justice, and outlined what the government could do to better protect renters through a stronger and more robust Renters’ Bill of Rights. Encampments represent a humanitarian crisis. Unfortunately, the Ontario government’s response has been to evict encampments, pushing unhoused individuals into even greater vulnerability without addressing the root causes of the housing crisis. In 2021, more than 26,000 Ontarians experienced homelessness, and this number continues to grow. To address this crisis, we’ve partnered with the Women’s National Housing & Homelessness Network, Canadian Centre for Housing Rights, and National Indigenous Women's Housing Network to release a joint statement calling for immediate action: ✔️ An end to encampment evictions ✔️ Housing-first policies rooted in human rights ✔️ Long-term investments in affordable, accessible housing and support services Homelessness is a housing crisis—and the solution is housing.
