National Security Innovation Capital (NSIC) is a Component of the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a United States Department of Defense program office, that enables dual-use hardware startups to advance key milestones in their product development by addressing the shortfall of private investment from trusted sources. The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), a United States Department of Defense program office; strengthens national security by accelerating the adoption of commercial technology in the Department of Defense and bolstering our allied and national security innovation bases. DIU partners with organizations across the DoD to rapidly prototype and field dual-use capabilities that solve operational challenges at speed and scale. With offices in Silicon Valley, Boston, Austin, Chicago and Washington, D.C., DIU is the Department’s gateway to leading technology companies across the country.

The ability to rapidly re-constitute space-based capabilities or re-supply time-sensitive cargo at precise locations on-orbit or terrestrially is a critical but presently under-developed capability for the DoD. In response, Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) launched the Novel Responsive Space Delivery (NRSD) project to prototype commercial solutions that enable responsive and precise point-to-point delivery to orbit, between vehicles in orbit, and to precisely to Earth via novel reentry vehicles and methods.
