The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering has been at the forefront of numerous keystone programs. Below is the first of the many initiatives spearheaded by Undersecretary Shyu. OUSD R&E will highlight a major keystone program each day this month in appreciation of Ms. Shyu's tenure. Defense Systems Management College (DSMC)/Defense Acquisition University Class Lecture – “Bridging the Valley of Death” Fort Belvoir, Virginia – November 19, 2024, OUSD R&E rolled out the Administration's priorities in the CHIPS & SCIENCE ACT by moving forward very rapidly on the Microelectronics Commons effort. This is the $2B effort that the DoD has the lead on. We have identified and awarded 8 Hubs across the U.S. – enabling the lab-to-fab concept and bringing together academics with start-ups, small companies, and large established companies. To date, we have more than $500 million in awards.  

#ComingSoon | The Navy is seeking prototype solutions for Ship Antenna Optimization and Docking Station. The goal of the Antenna Optimization is for each of the operating bands, develop ruggedized optimized antenna prototypes and a ruggedized docking that meet Government specifications. The Government’s full specification/technical requirements for these prototype solutions will be defined when the Request for Solutions (RFS) is released. The Prototype Development of the Ship Antenna Optimization and Docking Station project period of performance is anticipated at 14 months from award but will be defined by the performer’s proposed schedule. #ProjectMilestone | The Deep-Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) project continues to gain momentum. Plans by the United Kingdom’s (U.K.) Ministry of Defense (MOD) to redevelop the Cawdor Barracks in Pembrokeshire, Wales were announced in August 2024. Cawdor Barracks has been identified as the preferred site to host the landmark radar initiative’s second DARC site. This international collaboration, facilitated by the SpEC OTA, will establish a network of ground-based radars in Australia, the U.K., and the United States to provide global space monitoring, increasing AUKUS nations’ ability to detect, track, and identify objects in deep space, up to around 36,000 km away from earth. #RequestforNetworkInsight | The RNI was just released for the Nuclear-Armed Sea-Launched Cruise Missile (SLCM-N) opportunity. This S2MARTS announcement is intended to conduct market research to identify the interest and resources to support the Nuclear-Armed Sea-Launched Cruise Missile (SLCM-N) development program. The system will provide the necessary range and effectiveness to hold critical adversary targets at risk. The Navy is developing and procuring a nuclear-armed SLCM-N capability that leverages mature technologies, existing capabilities, and new techniques and approaches to reduce development time and help ensure cost effectiveness.
