"How to evaluate responsible carbon dioxide removals for the EU's 2040 climate target?" Our NEGEM Project perspectives paper was recently published in Environmental Research Letter's Focus on CDR issue, with some key policy messages: https://lnkd.in/dUCkdtfe 💎 Set realistic, separate, and legally binding targets and policies for emission reductions, permanent CO2 removals with geological storage, and LULUCF sector. 💎 Recognize the different roles and co-benefits of various CDR methods. The CO2 storage time and vulnerability to intended/unintended release of CO2 is essential. 💎 Adopt Member State-specific CDR portfolios, which consider the individual country's characteristics. Apply a multidisciplinary approach driven by sustainable supply of CDR, opposed to one following (unrealistic) CDR targets. 💎 Invest in research and development of CDR approaches and design policy and financial mechanisms which allow for learning and securing support from the society at large. We're thrilled to be featured today in CINEA's #ProjectSpotlight, thank you CINEA - European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency! A big thanks also to our partners, followers, and everyone interested in NEGEM's activities and findings. Over the past four years, we've learned a lot about #CDR and we hope these results will inspire further research, inform policy decisions, and ultimately drive the sustainable deployment of CDR in the EU and globally.
