NEWS: The footbridge of the future? We are excited to share the five shortlisted designs for our low-carbon footbridge contest. The winner, due to be announced in late Spring 2025, is designed to create a new crossing over the A127, and could form the new footbridge standard replicated across roads country-wide The shortlisted entries are from: Arup and Seán Harrington Architects COWI and Moxon Architects Ltd. Well done to Solene Fercocq (Arup) who confidently represented the Net Zero Bridges Group at #BridgesScotland 2024. Her presentation was titled: "Net Zero #Bridges and what else?" She covered an update of what has changed since #BridgesScotland 2023: - We have reached 40 members, a full list of which can be found here: https://lnkd.in/eZ383--x - We have published three resources for bridge designers including: a) A #Framework for #Decarbonisation for Bridges Owners, Engineers and Designers: https://lnkd.in/exh9tPjq (available via the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) Bridge Engineering journal) b) An Introduction to #PAS2080 for UK & Ireland Bridges: https://lnkd.in/eFGbY6xh c) #Carbon Calculations for Bridges v1.0: https://lnkd.in/eHTXu5h5 Solene's presentation also covered a deeper look in to PAS2080 and how it can be applied on #bridge projects effectively. The following conclusions were shared: 1. Collaboration across the value chain is key to effective implementation of the PAS2080 #carbonmanagement framework and impactful #decarbonisation ; 2. It is important to consider opportunities for co-benefits (e.g. #resilience, #biodiversity, #social value) in a #holistic manner.

Day2 of #BridgesScotland 2024, prelunch session: Solene Fercocq representing the Net Zero Bridges Group spoke about how #carbon can be reduced throughout the lifecycle of assets and #bridges: - early collaboration is vital for effective #carbonreduction on projects - system-wide view is really key to identifying the carbon reduction opportunities that would have the biggest impact - dare to challenge the brief when an idea to avoid or improve part of a project would achieve #sustainability gains - continuous improvement: knowledge sharing is vital to allow industry-wide learning, so industry participants can improve on solutions and make better informed decisions According to a presented #carbonreduction hierarchy, the 3 strategies that should be considered are: × avoid (avoid unnecessary interventions, features or overdesighning) × switch (consider if reuse or repurposing are options instead of new bridges/foundations/materials etc.) × improve (build on existing sustainable solutions and approaches) - adaptation and carbon reduction should be considered jointly and as integrated approaches - Consider nature-based solutions that replace grey built structures with green structures and systems - Such solutions directly benefit nature and deliver value to society by addressing critical challenges at the systems-level as opposed to asset-level #bridgeengineering #bridgedesign #bridgeconstruction #netzero

We are pleased to share our introductory guidance note for #PAS2080 for #Bridges. The note builds upon existing guidance (that we have highlighted in previous posts). It draws out the primary intentions of PAS2080 and provides a #carbon reduction hierarchy specific to #bridge projects that is aligned with holistic guidance provided in the specification. See below for a Q&A discussion with Jimmy Barratt-Thorne (WSP) focusing on his research: How do different types of #substructure affect the #embodiedcarbon of #bridges? His research looked at a side by side comparison of nine different #bridge substructure type to compare embodied #carbon. The Net Zero Bridges Group provided a peer review to challenge his assumptions and generate ideas to achieve greater #carbonefficiency. Key findings from the study include: 1. The substructure can contain as much carbon as the superstructure - so should be a priority at the concept stage; 2. This is to avoid locking in carbon that cannot be reduced at detailed design; 3. Integral bridges are more efficient than semi-integral bridges; 4. Double row pile foundations are the most carbon intensive; 5. The choice between a single row of piles and spread foundations is dependent on the source of materials and therefore the environmental product declarations (EPDs) used; 6. Reinforced soil gives the low carbon substructure solution; Read more below to find out more.
