Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC) and the U.S. government have finalized a Chips Act award to boost domestic semiconductor production. TSMC will invest $65 billion to build three facilities in Arizona, creating tens of thousands of jobs. This marks the largest foreign direct investment in a greenfield project in U.S. history. President Biden announced that the first facility is expected to open early next year. For the first time in decades, a U.S. manufacturing plant will produce leading-edge chips used in advanced technologies. The U.S. has committed up to $6.6 billion in grants and $5 billion in loans to support TSMC’s efforts.
