Conserving Forests For Future Generations
About us
Through the application of our core expertise in conserving forestland and advancing Exemplary Forestry, New England Forestry Foundation (NEFF) helps the people of New England to sustain their way of life, protect forest wildlife habitat and ecosystem services, and mitigate and adapt to climate change. In partnership with land owners, NEFF has conserved more than 1.2 million acres of forest, including one out of every three acres of forestland protected in New England since 1999. Together, we: LEAD BY EXAMPLE. NEFF owns 150+ Community Forests, practicing sustainable forestry while providing opportunities for public recreation. We demonstrate the value of forestry techniques and tools that foresters, landowners, and land trusts may choose to adopt. INNOVATE FOR IMPACT. NEFF finds new solutions to increase the pace of forest conservation and to encourage sustainable forestry. We develop new tools for communicating effectively with private landowners, more efficient approaches to conserve large forested areas, and meaningful partnerships and programs to achieve region-wide impact. FOCUS ON THE FUTURE. Since its inception, NEFF has worked towards a sustainable way of life, ensuring that forests continue to support the region’s communities. Today, climate change is making forestry even more essential to keep forests healthy, slow carbon emissions, and help reduce the impacts of global warming. SERVE A MOVEMENT. Through education, advocacy, and fundraising, NEFF continues to forge new connections to help keep New England forested.

A heartwarming story! The Tishman Speyer Rockefeller Christmas Tree will return to the Berkshires to provide new Habitat for Humanity International housing. A fitting tribute to the legacy of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The importance of sustainably harvested wood in society cannot be overstated. Renewable, reusable, and carbon-friendly, high-quality wood products are a nature-based solution that helps mitigate climate change and provide affordable housing. https://lnkd.in/eDijXj79 #rockefellercenter #christmas #tree #berkshires #massachusetts #wood #housing #climatechangemitigation

🗓️ As 2024 comes to a close, we’re reflecting on an incredible year-and-a-half of progress through our USDA Climate-Smart Commodities grant work: https://lnkd.in/ggKxFJdC. This initiative is shaping the future of forestry by advancing climate-smart practices that sequester carbon, strengthen rural economies, and conserve New England’s natural beauty. We’re grateful for the many outstanding partners who are helping make this work possible. Your collaboration and commitment drive this progress forward. 2025 is poised to be a transformative year for the project, and we’re ready to build on this momentum together. 📈 Here's to making even greater strides in the year ahead! #usda #climatesmart #commodities #forestry #newengland #conservation #bioeconomy #partnerships

📢 Big News: NEFF Awarded $4.3 Million Grant to Help Maine's Oldest Forests Store More Carbon 🌳 Marking a transformative investment in northern New England’s forests, the U.S. Forest Service has awarded $4.3 million to NEFF and its partners to help Maine forest landowners protect Maine’s oldest forests and implement practices on nearby lands that will help store carbon, and protect ecosystem health and biodiversity. NEFF will partner with landowners to defer timber harvesting in forests that are at least 150 years old, known as late successional old growth (LSOG) stands. “This is a singular opportunity to protect highly valuable, ecologically rare, and carbon-dense late successional old growth forests,” said Ryan Owens, Executive Director of the New England Forestry Foundation. “It also will allow us to fund landowners and foresters to practice forestry that mitigates climate change, improves forest productivity, and improves wildlife habitat, so this is a win-win-win.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/eX6uS5kG #carbon #forestry #climatechange #oldgrowth #newengland #maine

Exciting news from our USDA-funded Climate-Smart Commodities project! Smaller-acreage woodland owners in CT, RI and MA can now apply for funding through our Grow Resilient Oak-Hickory (GROH) Forests Program to care for the long-term, climate-resilient health of their forests and to increase carbon storage: https://lnkd.in/e9bjE_Jj In Massachusetts and Connecticut, parcels of 25+ forested acres are eligible; in Rhode Island, ownerships of 10+ forested acres are eligible. #climate #forestry #sustainableforestry #climatesolutions

NEFF is incredibly 🫶 thankful for the volunteers from Bristol Myers Squibb in Devens, MA, who helped us get Prouty Woods Community Forest (Littleton, MA) trail-ready for yesterday's reopening following a lengthy tree harvest. The crew from Bristol Myers Squibb joined NEFF staff in October to tackle tasks including 🌿 invasive plant removal, 🧹 trail clearing, and ⛏ installing a new property sign (the old property sign was destroyed in a storm earlier this year). 🤝 Support from companies like Bristol Myers Squibb is essential to NEFF’s conservation goals, helping us protect healthy forests, preserve biodiversity, and mitigate climate change. #newengland #forests #conservation #BristolMyersSquibb #volunteers #volunteering #trails #woods #hiking

It was a pleasure to celebrate our neighbors WORLD FARMERS INC at NEFF's Prouty Woods Community Forest this morning with the awarding of a congressional earmark secured and presented by Massachusetts State Senator Jamie Eldridge and Representative Jim Arciero. The funding from this earmark will help World Farmers build a well, lay water lines, and create additional infrastructure for the independent farmers at World Farmers' sites in Littleton, MA and Harvard, MA. Congratulations to Maria Moreira, Henrietta Isaboke, MPH, and the many farmers who will benefit from these improvements! Also present at the awarding: Littleton Town Administrator Jim Duggan, Chair of the Littleton Select Board Mark Rambacher, and NEFF's Kerry Castorano and David Ayers.

Last Thursday, members of the environmental community came together to learn about the complementary relationship between 🌿🦎 wildlands and 🌲🪵 woodlands as part of a holistic approach to forest conservation. NEFF Senior Advisor Bob Perschel and Northeast Wilderness Trust President and CEO Jon Leibowitz spoke at the event and praised the partnership between NEFF and NEWT as a model for other organizations to follow. A 🎥 recording of "Wildlands & Woodlands: A Unified Vision for the Future of New England's Forests" is now available to watch online: https://lnkd.in/ekqPzd_P. #newengland #conservation #forestry #wilderness #forests #climatechange #bioeconomy #biodiversity #wildlife #carbon

Jennifer Hushaw Shakun is at Portland Museum of Art's Mass Timber Maine conference this week. Jen will be a panelist at Friday's 2024 Bernard Osher Lecture "From Forest to Framework: The Journey of Mass Timber." The panel, with representatives from the forest products and architecture and construction supply chain, will discuss the impact of mass timber on New England's forest products and building economy. The lecture begins at 1:30 p.m. at Hannaford Hall at the University of Southern Maine. Tickets still available: https://lnkd.in/eV8ZvC73. #newengland #forestry #maine #masstimber #construction #bioeconomy
Today was a great kick off to the Portland Museum of Art’s Maine Mass Timber Conference. Attended a field trip that sampled all the themes of this event—forests, mass timber, and the arts! We started our morning at New England Forestry Foundation’s very own Arnold Family Forest in Freeport to talk trees and sustainable forest management with our Staff Forester Michael Redante. Then visits to two mass timber buildings—the office of Patrons Oxford Insurance Company in Portland with its open, airy design showcasing beautiful glulam structural elements and 317 Main Community Music Center in Yarmouth with its CLT performance space that’s become a hub for the local community. Wrapped with a tour of Winslow Homer’s seaside studio and some spectacular views. Looking forward to Day 2!
