This Sunday, January 19, celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with WNYC and The Apollo Theater. “‘A Burning House’: MLK and the American Experiment” will explore Dr. King’s enduring work through the lens of his profound reflection on integration and his call for deeper societal transformation. Inspired by his conversation with Harry Belafonte imagining America as a "burning house," the event will explore the complexities of belonging, justice, and collective responsibility in our contemporary moment. To follow Dr. King’s call for Americans to “become the firemen” and “not stand by and let the house burn,” the event will bring together distinguished scholars, faith leaders, artists and public intellectuals for a dialogue about building a society that truly embraces all its members. The conversation will be hosted by WNYC’s Michael Hill, Brian Lehrer, and Janae Pierre, along with WQXR’s Terrance McKnight. If you can’t join us in person, WNYC will record the event for broadcast on Monday, January 20 at 2pm on 93.9 FM, AM 820, and www.wnyc.org Sunday, January 19, 2pm at The Apollo. “Mr. Nasser hoped the naming contest helped people ‘feel this connection to what’s bigger than all the chaos that’s happening on the ground right now,’ he said. ‘Space is the biggest big picture we have.’” After eight months, almost 3,000 submissions, seven finalists and more than 10,000 votes – not to mention a couple of science-loving celebrities (thank you Penn Badgley & Bill Nye “The Science Guy”!) – Radiolab and the The International Astronomical Union’s Quasi-Moon Naming Contest has a winner! Earth’s companion space object is now officially called CARDEA, after the Roman goddess of door hinges, thresholds and transitional spaces. Remy Tumin spoke with Radiolab’s Latif Nasser, the IAU’s Kelly Blumenthal, PhD, EdM, and The University of Georgia student Clay Chilcutt, who submitted the winning name.

We’re proud to share that WNYC’s series “Imminent Danger: One Doctor and a Trail of Injured Women” has been recognized with a Front Page Award for Investigative Reporting from the Newswomen’s Club of New York. The series takes an in-depth look at systemic failings in the healthcare system that allow doctors with questionable track records to move between states and regain licenses to practice after they’ve been revoked. Congratulations to editor Christopher Werth, reporter Karen Shakerdge, and the entire team who collaborated on this searing report.
💥 The Newswomen's Club of New York is pleased to present the winners of the 2024 Front Page Awards 💥 Check out the press release for the dozens of women who were recognized this year! Throughout 2024, New York-area newswomen reported on some of the year’s most pressing issues, including climate change, women’s health, mental health, gun violence, immigration and the systemic issues facing our communities. This was never more evident than in the work of those who are recipients of the 2024 Front Page Awards. The work honored this year spans all beats, and all mediums — from investigations into sex trafficking, the state of the art market, the explosive allegations of sexual harassment in real estate, bad air quality in Utah and the difficulties of reentering the job market after being a victim of gun violence. The 87th annual Front Page Awards pay tribute to these exceptional newswomen at local, regional and national outlets across the New York metropolitan area. The gala event to honor winners will be held at the New York Athletic Club on Feb. 4, 2025. Visit the release and our website for info on tickets and how to join the Club!

ICYMI: In celebration of Mayor Fiorello La Guardia’s birthday this week, take a listen to “Patience and Fortitude: A History of Mayor La Guardia on WNYC.” Host Alison Stewart takes a deep dive into the WNYC archives in an exploration of one of New York’s most important mayors. The first Italian-American Mayor of New York, La Guardia led the city during the aftermath of the Great Depression, Hitler's rise to power and World War II. He also appeared frequently on WNYC’s airwaves - his weekly "Talks to the People" broadcasts averaged 2 million listeners. He spoke directly to New Yorkers about issues that affected them, from the price of groceries, to war defense training, to more light-hearted moments like when he read the comics to children during a newspaper strike. The special also includes an interview with Terry Golway, author of I Never Did Like Politics: How Fiorello La Guardia Became America’s Mayor, And Why He Still Matters.
