First In Newsday: Las Vegas Sands looks to widen the Meadowbrook Parkway as part of a $150 million plan to mitigate the impact of a new casino-resort on the site of the Nassau Coliseum. The company’s traffic mitigation efforts include adding one lane on each side of a stretch of the 90-year-old Meadowbrook from the Northern State to Hempstead Turnpike and spend an estimated $20 million to build a new water tower to supply the Coliseum site, homes and businesses around it. Too often, survivors of domestic violence who do not have children are shut out of life saving shelter services due to a quirk in the way the State administers funding for shelters. No one's life should be put at risk because of a broken funding formula. Check out my op-ed with Wendy Linsalata in Newsday Media Group to learn what Gov. Hochul can do to fix it https://lnkd.in/eVtH7ZXk #SAFEShelterAct #domesticviolence

I had the pleasure of driving up to Middletown to cover Garden City and Floral Park boys soccer as both lifted state titles for the first time in program history. 10 years ago I was a ball boy on the same grounds, watching my older brother win a state title with Commack. Returning to cover the same event, watching these kids realize their dreams, is an honor and a privilege to report on. I wrote Garden City’s semifinal and championship, and Floral Park’s semifinal. Both schools compliment each other well in attitude: Garden City being all business while staying undefeated, and Floral Park riding a swagger-filled run of a team that bought into the “Why not us?” mantra of coach Ahkeel Rodney. News Newsday investigation into an expanding apparatus of license plate readers in Nassau County: https://lnkd.in/eZNtYJA4
Today’s P1 for Newsday Media Group: An investigation into an expanding apparatus of license plate readers in Nassau County. Police officials say the cameras, from a company called Flock Safety, have the ability to pinpoint wanted vehicles in real time and offer an edge in criminal investigations. Some experts and civil liberty advocates say the tech needs greater guardrails in New York, where state officials don’t track the total number of cameras operated by individual departments or have strict policies on data retention.

The sounds of happy chatter and laughter filled the activity room of a Nesconset assisted living facility recently, when a group of teens — affectionately known as the “girls in pink” — dropped by for an afternoon of manicures and conversation. Once a month, students from Smithtown East High School — almost all wearing pink T-shirts — visit Amber Court of Smithtown to chat with residents, paint their nails and help them complete a seasonal craft. “They’re not just doing it for community service,” said Victoria Lynch, 78. “They enjoy us and we enjoy them.” https://lnkd.in/eFzcuegg
