Building community for entrepreneurial job-seekers | ex-Goldman Sachs, On Deck, Contrary

Really fun episode! First time I’ve pulled back the curtain on how NEXT Careers actually works behind the scenes 😅 Cool to join a podcast where community-builders can learn from each other 🙌

CEO at Curated Connections | Why aren't more conversations happening in your community?

Anthony Nardini (Anthony) is the only community builder I know of who boasts a 60% referral rate for his high-ticket cohort-based community. Meaning that 60% of all new customers are referred by people in the previous cohorts. But that’s not surprising to me because he might be the most intense community builder I’ve interviewed. If you have time only to listen to one episode of the Beginner Maps (free crash course), I’ll suggest you listen to this one to get a glimpse of what it takes to build such a community business. We get into: • Why he interviews each of the 250+ candidates • His referral cultivation strategy • Running experiments to keep things fresh • Turning members into enthusiastic volunteers • Automations that can make or break the business This is a must-watch for anyone building high-end communities or cohort-based programs. Kind of surreal to be quoted in Inc's cover story on the wave of entrepreneurial people leaving big companies to build or join startups. And awesome to see Nataliya Rogachkina's inspiring journey highlighted in the article, too 🤗 Shoutout to Issie Lapowsky and Mike Hofman for a great piece capturing this trend – thanks for including me and NEXT Careers!

Life in big tech was good while it lasted, as Silicon Valley companies lured workers with massive salaries and stock options, nap pods and fun budgets, and, perhaps most important, the promise of stability. Rebounder Founders: They were pushed out of cushy jobs at Google, Twitter, and Meta. Now they’re building startups and embracing the risk of entrepreneurship. Alphonzo Terrell, founder of SPILL, is one of the rebounder founders we feature in the November Issue of Inc. Magazine. So excited to be featured in November cover story for Inc. Magazine alongside incredible entrepreneurs (including my good friends Anthony Nardini & Emily Woo). With more than half a million tech workers being laid off since 2022, there is so much potential for innovation. It's hard to leave a well-paid job with benefits even if you have a good idea, so for some of us layoffs were a push to finally do it. I am looking forward to keep reading more stories of companies started by "rebounder entrepreneurs"! Thank you Issie Lapowsky for including my story #techlayoffs #rebounderentrepreneurs #meta #riotgames

“I’m a seasoned and detail-oriented executive looking for a mission-driven company with a great culture in a space I’m excited about.” 😆 ^^ example of what NOT to say if you’re looking for your next thing. This gives the other person no real information about you or what opportunities to send your way. Try the Mission-Sector-Stage-Role framework instead. It turns your advocates into referral sources for job opportunities. Mission: What matters to you most in your next chapter? Sector: What industry, sector or problem space are you targeting? Stage: How big of a company would you like to join? Role: What would you like to spend your time doing? Some examples: - Series A-C climatetech startups where I can continue leading Product - 3x VP Growth at early-stage consumer marketplace businesses - Targeting a growth-stage B2B SaaS startup leading Strategic Finance while learning from a killer CFO - Early-stage generalist passionate about using AI to improve the accuracy of medical procedures - VP Eng for fintech startups, usually around Series B when they’re figuring out how to scale Empower your #networking contacts to help you: be specific about what you want next using the MSSR framework. Full Job Search Strategy workshop around this topic on the NEXT Careers website if you'd like to go deeper!

I build tech communities | ex-google, meta | partner at next wave nyc (investing in pre-seed + seed)

Looking for a job? Don't underestimate the power of joining a curated community. Figuring out the next chapter of your career can be painstakingly hard. Even for the most talented people. I was lucky. During my last job search, I was able to lean on an incredible peer group. They helped me figure out what I wanted, source roles, tell my story in a thoughtful way, and negotiate effectively. Having a peer group support you through any career transition is a must. It's impossible to do it alone. One of my closest friends, Simon Zhou, recently told me about NEXT Careers, a community for mid-career and executive job-seekers supporting each other to land their next startup roles. I love the approach. NEXT brings together amazing people – and provides access to VC firms, recruiters, knowledge, and the support of peers who can share opportunities and resources. Anthony Nardini is building something awesome. His 4th NEXT cohort starts in a couple weeks and is nearly full. Apply here: https://lnkd.in/eBFbzBrP

CEO & Founder of General Collaboration + Host of 'Minimum Viable Podcast'

Forced networking is super cringey. Putting yourself out there can be awkward and draining, especially for introverts. But Anthony Nardini’s advice is to flip the script. Instead of focusing on what YOU can get from networking… Ask yourself how you can GIVE. When you start a conversation with the goal of adding value for the other person, it shifts the entire dynamic. Suddenly, you're not there to schmooze or self-promote. You're there to make a genuine connection and offer your knowledge, resources, or support. An authentic desire to help shines through and makes you infinitely more attractive to the people you want to build relationships with. So next time you're dreading a networking event, try this simple mindset shift. You might be surprised at how much more enjoyable (and fruitful) networking becomes. — Has shifting your focus from "getting" to "giving" made networking less painful for you? I'd love to hear your experiences! Don't miss the full episode with Anthony Nardini, Founder at NEXT Careers, on Minimum Viable Podcast, now live on generalcollaboration.com

Operator | Builder | Always Learning

One of the greatest signs of a healthy community is the willingness of its members to take responsibility for its future growth. NEXT Careers is a primary example of this idea, and Anthony Nardini is a genuine steward of those in his care. If anyone is looking for a future role at a startup, I highly recommend you consider attending this discussion.

I remember how nervous I felt a year ago when launching NEXT 🫣 Absolutely crazy that we’ve welcomed 300 members in the past year, selected from over 2,000 applicants 🤯 NEXT Careers members are all figuring something out – landing a new role, founding vs joining, building a fractional portfolio, if they should leave their current role, or some other transition moment. Creating a space for entrepreneurial people to be authentic and vulnerable allows us to accelerate each other’s decision-making by tapping into our collective experiences and network. This spirit of generosity is how we’ve been able to grow in such a high-quality way: almost half of the most recent cohort was referred by a program alum or a speaker. I’m so grateful to truly hundreds of people who have helped build NEXT. From the amazing speakers who led over 100 live events, dozens of VC firms recruiting for their portco’s, supporters who have referred their most talented friends to join as well as the members co-creating this experience alongside me. Really proud of the impact NEXT has had on the careers of hundreds of the most talented people I’ve ever met. We’ve just opened up applications for our fourth cohort kicking off in a month and I’m so excited to meet our incoming crew 🤗 More info here: https://www.nextcareers.co #jobsearch #hiring #startups
