Yesterday, Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar welcomed the 5th-grade students of Noyes Elementary School at her Residence. Every school year the Embassy participates in the Embassy Adoption Program of District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and Washington Performing Arts, “adopting” and teaching a class of local students about the Kingdom of the Netherlands. During this second session of the year, the students were excited to learn about the work and career of the Ambassador. They were also introduced to Dutch food as the chef taught them how to make poffertjes and bitterballen. In between, Embassy colleagues moderated lively discussions. On December 10th, a group of young or beginning civil servants from the Ministry of Health, also known as Jong VWS, visited the embassy. In different sessions, they learned about #HealthDiplomacy and the US healthcare system. Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar explained the different layers of diplomacy and elaborated on the complexities of diplomacy in times of geopolitical tensions.    The session was followed by a session with health counselors of the European Union Delegation to the United States, Canada and the WHO on health diplomacy, and a presentation by KFF and the HHS on the US healthcare system.    The aim of the sessions was to provide the group with knowledge about health and healthcare in an international context, gain an understanding of the US healthcare system, and the challenges and opportunities both bring and provide. #health #NLintheUSA Monica Schagen

Dutch and American scientists last week published a white paper that details how the US and the Netherlands can collaborate further in using satellites to better understand how greenhouse gases, reactive gases, and clouds and aerosols affect climate. We invited those involved with the white paper to the embassy last night to celebrate the paper’s publishing. We talked about our mutual achievements and the next steps we can take together to further our collaboration. The Netherlands and the United States share many scientific values, such as academic freedom, inclusivity, and equitable collaboration. These values lie at the core of our respective academic ecosystems. This morning, we held a panel discussion at the embassy with Frederick Lawrence of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Peter McDonough of American Council on Education, and Jacqueline Pfeffer Merrill, Ph.D. of Campus Free Expression Project, who shared interesting perspectives on the crucial challenge we face on academic freedom and how this relates to the freedom of speech and ongoing political shifts. It is crucial to continuously protect these core values and to keep opening spaces for a safe discussion regarding freedom: academic and of speech. Scientists from the Netherlands and the United States published a white paper about scientific collaboration on space and climate. 🇳🇱 🇺🇸 🌌 During a two-day workshop in October, 19 leading scientists from the Netherlands and the US came together to exchange expertise on greenhouse gases, reactive gases, and clouds and aerosols. The workshop was supported by the Partners for International Business program, “Netherlands Industries for Cooperation with US Space Industry.” The workshop resulted in this white paper, which identifies key deliverables to sustain and enhance our strong collaboration. Satellite remote sensing of greenhouse gases, reactive gases, and clouds and aerosols plays a crucial role in climate research. It allows scientists to track the distribution and transport of pollutants, which would be impossible with ground-based measurements alone. As the white paper states, “We believe that by coming together, we can further enhance and strategize our cooperation and achieve significant advancements in the field of space and climate.” On December 9, the scientists will be welcomed at the Dutch Embassy in Washington, D.C. to celebrate the publishing of the white paper and discuss next steps. #NLintheUSA #DutchCollaboration #space #climate

November 25 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and the beginning of the Orange the World campaign.  🤚 🚺 🟠   🔶 What is the #OrangeTheWorld Campaign? It’s an annual international 16-day campaign used as an organizing strategy around the world to call for the elimination of all forms of gender-based violence.   🔶 Why Orange? The color orange - chosen by the UN - is a symbol of hope.   🔶 Why is the Netherlands joining the campaign? It’s not just that we share the orange color. We are joining because it aligns with our priorities on ending gender-based violence, promoting gender equality, and our Feminist Foreign Policy.   🗣️ We call on everyone to take action during these #16DaysOfActivism. Only by working together can we build a future where women and girls live free from violence. HRH Princess Margriet and Prof. Mr. Pieter van Vollenhoven joined the 43rd edition of the NAF Ball in New York. The Netherland-America Foundation promotes the Dutch-American friendship through numerous activities in the cultural, scientific and educational fields. The proceeds of the NAF Ball are used for scholarships and other exchange programs. One of its founders was Franklin D. Roosevelt, later the U.S. president. The Princess and Professor have been patrons of the NAF since 1981. The royal guests met with the Dutch community in the United States, including Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar and Consul General Ahmed Dadou.
