Updates

  • A rose vial that includes a message from President and CEO Stephen Reintjes Sr., MD, will adorn the Donate Life float in the Rose Parade tomorrow morning in Pasadena. Dr. Reintjes’ rose will be one of thousands on the Donate Life Rose Parade float honoring donors, recipients and others touched by organ and tissue donation. The Donate Life float, called Woven Together: the Dance of Life, honors organ, eye and tissue transplant recipients and donors. The float represents a collaborative national effort by 50 organizations, including the local Midwest Transplant Network, to reach people with the simple, life-giving message that organ, eye and tissue donations save lives. As of Nov. 14, NKCH had nine organ donor heroes with 27 organs transplanted including kidneys being the most donated at nine, followed by: liver (eight), heart (five), lungs (four) and intestines (one). There were 53 tissue and cornea hero donors with up to 5,300 lives improved through the donations.

  • Becca Stone, RN, nominated Ashlee Turner, CNA, her 9th Floor Pavilion coworker, for the Sunflower Award after Ashley competently handled an emergency situation. Becca wrote how Ashlee displayed great heroism when a patient’s family member suffered a medical emergency in the Pavilion drive while Ashlee was discharging a patient. Becca noted Ashlee kept a calm demeanor and responded to the emergency while keeping her discharging patient calm. “She was able to think on her feet and save the day,” Becca said. “I believe Ashlee’s quick thinking had a huge outcome on the situation. I am very proud of her.” Congratulations, Ashlee! 🌻
