  • About 80% of cancer pain can be relatively well managed by oncologists using pain medications — but that leaves 20% that can be difficult to treat using standard approaches. "What I want the patients who see me to feel is hope, as well as a sense of comfort," says Michael Erdek, MD, director of cancer pain management. "Not every patient can get complete relief, but there's always something that can be done, and I strive to listen and to care. Sometimes just feeling heard, along with the patient’s confidence in the doctor’s abilities, can go a long way toward helping control pain." Randee's fight against ovarian cancer took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with the BRCA gene mutation. While being treated in Alaska for ovarian cancer, Randee was then diagnosed with the BRCA gene mutation — this significantly increases her risk of developing breast cancer. Her research led her to Susan Palleschi, MD, FACS, director of breast surgery at Glen Cove Hospital and Neil Tanna, MD, MBA, FACS, vice president of the Katz Women's Surgical Center. Both empowered Randee to make the best decision for her future. At the center, Randee received the full treatment of care from her nipple-sparing mastectomies to her full breast reconstruction. Not to mention, our amazing nurse navigators were with her every step of the way. 🙌 Here's to Randee's incredible bravery and positive outlook. Watch her full story ▶️ https://bit.ly/3Bw4sCx

  • As we begin a new year, it's important to take charge of your health. Some cancers can be found early and regular screening is an important tool to help detect them. But how do you know what screenings are necessary? Start by talking to your doctor about your risk factors and what screenings are recommended. Ways to help lower your risk of developing cancer: ▪️ Stay away from all forms of tobacco ▪️ Maintain a healthy weight ▪️ Move or exercise regularly ▪️ Eat healthy with plenty of fruits and vegetables ▪️ Avoid alcohol or have 1 drink per day for women and 2 per day for men ▪️ Protect your skin with SPF and avoid UV rays ▪️ Understand your personal and family history for cancer ▪️ Get regular check-ups and cancer screening tests Save and share this with your loved ones and find out more about cancer screenings. https://bit.ly/3V1Kw1c

  • Mehran Habibi, MD, MBA, is championing better breast cancer care in Staten Island. Despite having a population comparable to Baltimore, Staten Island had significantly fewer breast cancer programs before the opening of the Florina Cancer Center at Staten Island University Hospital. The new center expands access to screening, imaging and treatment for Staten Island residents and those in nearby Brooklyn and New Jersey. Dr. Habibi also highlights his research interests, including advancing surgical techniques and using genomic and radiologic data for personalized therapies.
