A National Science Foundation ADVANCE grant Advancing STEM Careers by Empowering Network Development
About us
Through regional peer-to-peer mentoring networks of mid-career women STEM faculty and administrators, the goal of NSF ADVANCE ASCEND is to create change agents to drive institutional transformation resulting in the retention and advancement of a diverse faculty in STEM. Awarded $1,000,0000 in Fall 2019 from National Science Foundation ADVANCE program, ASCEND: Advancing STEM Careers by Empowering Network Development develops faculty change agents by providing education, training, and professional support to equip women for promotion and leadership positions, and university administrators to develop inclusive campus policies and cultures. Administrators work within ASCEND to drive institutional transformation by identifying, developing, and pursuing goals that reduce obstacles and increase the retention and advancement of a diverse faculty in STEM. ASCEND creates environments at primarily undergraduate institutions that enable women STEM faculty to fully realize their careers. Through regional networks in the Midwest, Southeast, and Northwest participants are grouped to form Alliances composed of 4–5 faculty members in the same discipline, as well as an administrator Alliance, across different institutions. The Alliances meet monthly providing small group support to one another and develop connections at different institutions. All participants are offered networking and collaboration opportunities, education, training, resources, and professional support. As “a rising tide lifts all boats,” this regional approach advances both faculty and institutions. By both developing women leaders among the faculty and empowering administrators to improve support policies and remove institutional obstacles to advance diverse faculty, ASCEND provides a model framework to create long-lasting change within the academy.

This scholarship opportunity makes a huge impact on the ability for more women to participate in this program.
At HERS, we believe leadership development should be accessible to leaders across all fields, institution types, and practice areas. That's why we're proud to offer financial support through the HERS Scholarship Fund, made possible by generous contributors - many of whom are HLI alums. HERS scholarships cover up to 50% of the program fee and preference is given to leaders from underrepresented institution types (community colleges, HBCUs) and units (Athletics, IT, HR). Don't let financial constraints hold you back! Apply to the HERS Leadership Institute today- if you are accepted, you can apply for funding through a HERS Scholarship. 94% of mid-career women STEM faculty participating in NSF ADVANCE ASCEND attribute the project to helping them feel better equipped to navigate professional challenges. WOW! Last weekend our Steering Committee--Chrystal Bruce, Sarah Kirk, Mia Bertagnolli, Hala Schepmann, Elizabeth Roberts-Kirchhoff, Patricia Flatt (we missed you Victoria Turgeon and MK Watson) -- gathered to brainstorm more ideas to disseminate the project's findings. We are developing unique and innovate ways to share the results and outcomes from our National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE grant for the greatest impact. NSF is proud to announce that four NSF-supported researchers were awarded the MacArthur Genius Grant! The MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant honors the extraordinary talent, creativity and potential in recipients — scientists, writers, artists, teachers, entrepreneurs and more — by offering no-strings-attached fellowships of $800,000. Among the recipients of the 2024 "Genius Grant" are Vanderbilt University Keivan Guadalupe Stassun, a distinguished astrophysicist renowned for dedicating his career to expanding opportunities in STEM for underrepresented groups, Benjamin Van Mooy, a Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution ocean scientist dedicated to studying the impacts that microbial organisms like plankton have on marine ecosystems, and two evolutionary biologists, Joseph Parker Caltech and Martha Muñoz Yale University, who are exploring the intricacies of species adaptation. These exceptional individuals are not only making significant contributions to their respective fields but are also actively working to create a positive impact on global challenges. Interestingly, each of them has a notable connection to NSF, underscoring the importance of their research in advancing scientific knowledge and addressing critical environmental issues. https://bit.ly/4f2eWaB 📷: John D. and Catherine T.
