The fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson last week has all the hallmarks of a revenge killing, says Northeastern University School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Professor James Alan Fox. Upon examining the bullet casings, authorities discovered the words “deny,” “defend,” and “depose” written in permanent marker. The message closely resembles the phrase “delay, deny, defend,” which refers to a set of common tactics by insurers to avoid paying claims. “The inscription on the ammunition, the fact that he stalked this person down–and apparently knew that this conference was going on in New York City–says to me that this is likely an act of revenge,” Professor Fox told Northeastern Global News. “The getaway plan, use of the silencer, the fact that he was wearing a hood–these are done as a means to get away with the crime.” Read more on Northeastern Global News. https://lnkd.in/eFSwd8SB

Professor and director of Northeastern University School of Public Policy and Urban Affairs Maria Ivanova led a delegation in the fifth round of negotiations on an international treaty on plastic pollution authorized by the United Nations in March 2022. “The more we produce, the more pollution there will be. So we have to balance out our production with our consumption, and then innovate in the ways of disposal,” Professor Ivanova says. “We need collective action. We don’t need federal policies to be able to make our own decisions.” Read more from Northeastern Global News. https://lnkd.in/dKzJFg4Z

#DonaldTrump has painted dire pictures of liberal states through his campaign speeches. He called Aurora, Colorado a “war zone,” raising alarms about Venezuelan gangs–which the mayor has said are “grossly exaggerated”–and California a “paradise lost,” accusing #KamalaHarris of making it the state with “the most decay.” “It’s certainly not by accident that Trump is in these places, in part because he is trying to create the impression that he’s willing to go into the belly of the beast and do battle and be in unfriendly territory to bring to life an issue that’s near and dear to his campaign,” says Northeastern University Department of Political Science Professor Costas Panagopoulos. “There’s something to be said for being physically present and on the ground when you’re talking about specific places to give the audience the impression you know what you’re talking about.” Read more on USA TODAY: https://lnkd.in/gYeBQ7GJ

A court-ordered break-up of Google would be unprecedented in modern American corporate history, delivering a big blow to the Big Tech company that even Microsoft ultimately dodged when it lost its own US antitrust case two decades ago. Google is “a complicated company that has an awful lot of operating levers to achieve what it wants, and so it needs to be matched with an equally wide set of complementary remedies,” comments #NUCSSH Economics Professor John Kwoka. A recently passed law in California requires online influencer parents to track how much time their children appear in monetized content and how much they earn from these posts, ensuring that they are compensated for their time. Northeastern University experts, however, say that the law is difficult to enforce and doesn’t address some of the other issues when it comes to kids’ online presence, such as their lack of privacy and possible effects on their social and emotional growth. “You have to be a sophisticated minor with an awareness that the law exists and the ability to access legal counsel to get your remedy,” says #NUCSSH Professor Hilary Robinson. “The likelihood that this is effectively enforceable by any but the most well-connected kids is kind of a joke.” Read more on Northeastern Global News: https://lnkd.in/dSBm3QDn

Northeastern University Department of Political Science Professor Mai’a Cross is receiving a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York to break new ground on “transnational political networks,” which are “groups of individuals who transcend national boundaries” and exert influence over global order. “This project mainly targets questions about the forces shaping the future global order, but it also tackles this broader challenge of polarization in the international system,” says Professor Cross. “I wrote the grant proposal on my own with feedback from Carnegie Corporation, and am grateful for the support of the fantastic research administration team here at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities.” Read more on @Northeastern Global News: https://lnkd.in/e_KXBVqj
