Just when you think robotics couldn't get more fascinating - researchers here in New York at Cornell University are now using mushrooms to control robots! And not just any mushrooms, but the same oyster mushrooms you might find on your dinner plate. By harnessing the voltage spikes generated by fungal networks when exposed to UV light, they've created robots that can roll and hop in response to environmental stimuli. What's particularly exciting about this work is how it expands the frontier of biohybrid robotics. While we've seen robots powered by cardiac cells and lab-grown muscles, using fungal networks opens up entirely new possibilities. Imagine agricultural robots that can sense nitrogen levels in soil or detect perfectly ripe fruit - all powered by organisms that are inexpensive to maintain and exquisitely sensitive to environmental changes. This groundbreaking research from Cornell demonstrates why New York continues to be at the forefront of robotics innovation. Sometimes the best solutions aren't found in more powerful motors or better algorithms, but in understanding and adapting nature's own sensing mechanisms. A short time ago, a robot barista named Adam served up its first cups of coffee in Greenpoint, Brooklyn! While $5 robot-made cold brew might sound like science fiction, it's happening right here in New York at Botbar Coffee. This joins a growing trend of automated food service in our city, from Brooklyn Dumpling Shop's automat-style locations to other automated retail experiments popping up across the boroughs. What's particularly interesting is how these deployments are teaching us about the real-world challenges of consumer-facing robotics. Even simple tasks like refilling coffee cups require complex orchestration of perception, planning, and precise movement - something humans do effortlessly but robots are still mastering. The opening day "jitters" (pun intended!) at Botbar highlight the gap between controlled laboratory environments and the unpredictable world of customer service. As New York continues to be a testing ground for retail automation, we're learning valuable lessons about human-robot interaction in public spaces. The real question isn't just whether robots can make a decent cup of coffee, but how they'll integrate into our daily lives and what roles they'll play in the future of urban services. Exciting to see New York leading the way in drone innovation for critical infrastructure! NYSEG, RG&E, and the New York Power Authority are transforming how we maintain our power grid by using drones to inspect thousands of miles of transmission lines. What's particularly fascinating is how NY-based Manifold Robotics is pushing the boundaries - their drones can actually navigate using the electromagnetic fields from the power lines themselves! This is a perfect example of how robotics and automation are making essential services safer and more reliable right here in New York. Traditional power line inspection often requires dangerous climbing or expensive equipment. With drones equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced sensing technology, we can spot potential issues before they become problems, all while keeping workers safe. The scale of this initiative is impressive - NYPA alone has trained over 100 drone pilots and is investing $37 million in their drone program through 2028. It's another great example of how New York is becoming a hub for practical robotics applications that solve real-world problems.
