Methylmercury is difficult to remove from waterways and readily accumulates in the food chain, threatening humans with impacts such as birth defects and brain and neurological damage. Researchers have identified a molecule essential for the microbial conversion of less toxic inorganic mercury into the neurotoxin methylmercury, moving closer to blocking the dangerous pollutant before it forms.

Researchers from Argonne National Laboratory used #supercomputer Frontier to achieve a breakthrough in simulating the universe. These advanced calculations set a new standard for modeling both normal matter and dark matter together. The simulation matches the scale of major telescope surveys, something that has never been done before. ✨

ORNL scientists have identified a key molecule in the formation of a potent neurotoxin—and are one step closer to blocking the dangerous pollutant methylmercury before it can form. Oak Ridge National Laboratory researchers working with the University of Michigan confirmed that the molecule S-adenosylmethionineis plays a key role in converting inorganic mercury into methylmercury. The discovery will inform a model of the proteins responsible for the pollutant’s formation and could lead to solutions for preventing it at the source. https://lnkd.in/eTyYzwrc

✨When the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)'s Oak Ridge National Laboratory launched the Summit #supercomputer in 2018, it provided scientists with incredible computing power to solve challenges in energy, #AI, human health, and other research areas that were out of reach. These discoveries helped shape our understanding of the universe, bolster US economic competitiveness, and contribute to a better future. Now after six years of production service providing over 200 million node hours to researchers around the world, Summit will be decommissioned today. ⌛🎞️ Here’s a look back at some of its greatest accomplishments. 🌟
