📸 I don't always shove my face into glowing camera holes, but when I do, they are to test out some of the coolest Aesthetic Technology devices in the world at the Octane OC Aesthetic Tech Forum. Special thanks to the team at Strive Compounding Pharmacy for letting me get up and personal with my skin. What I learned from this year at ATF: ➡️ Medical Aesthetics is an economically resilient market (Thanks Annie Robertson Hockey) ➡️ AI and machine learning is being utilized to improve protocols and outcomes, as well as increase safety and consistency. ➡️ Private equity is playing a larger role in the aesthetics space. ➡️ I need to moisturize more, and maybe do a face mask before the next conference.

  • The science of beauty is evolving, and we’re on the cusp of something extraordinary. During a captivating session, Steven Dayan, MD, FACS (Impressions Chicago) explored the profound connection between beauty, the human experience, and groundbreaking research on oxytocin. Known as the "love hormone," oxytocin has remarkable effects on the skin, improving tissue healing, reducing skin aging, and enhancing confidence, self-esteem, and pro-social interactions. Its unique positive feedback loop allows the skin to stimulate oxytocin release in the brain, creating a powerful connection between emotional well-being and physical health. Dr. Dayan highlighted nature’s influence on these processes, from the sun’s mood-elevating effects to jasmine’s ability to increase oxytocin levels by stimulating Piezo1 receptors. These insights have paved the way for a new category of innovation in skincare: MoodCeutricals, which harness oxytocin’s potential to improve both skin quality and emotional well-being. In a recent study, this approach demonstrated statistically significant improvements in 7 out of 8 categories, and the upcoming XOMD product, set to launch on 1/23/25, is poised to redefine the industry. Beyond the science, Dr. Dayan emphasized the irreplaceable human ability to feel and connect—qualities that artificial intelligence can never replicate. Sentient skin differentiates us from robots, producing stress hormones, feel-good peptides, and oxytocin, reminding us of the profound ways we communicate and act on a subconscious level. As we embrace this new era of beauty and wellness, it’s clear that beauty is not just seen—it’s felt.

Benjamin Hernandez (Skytale Group) stressed the critical need for due diligence, understanding deal structures, and choosing the right PE partners to ensure long-term success. Jason Bloom, MD, FACS (Bloom Facial Plastic Surgery ) shared valuable insights on maintaining autonomy and prioritizing patient experience, even as the industry evolves. The discussion reinforced a powerful message: successful partnerships in aesthetics require alignment, transparency, and a commitment to preserving the unique value of each practice. As our industry continues to grow, we remain focused on supporting initiatives that prioritize both patient care and practice integrity.
