  • What a great Midyear Meeting! Our top 5 takeaways from #ASHP24 It’s Time to Get Real About AI — The applications for AI in pharmacy went beyond the theoretical at this year’s Midyear meeting. Keynote speaker, Dr. Sanjay Gupta, discussed how AI can be used to perform routine tasks for pharmacists to decrease administrative worry and stress, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care. Dr. Yaa Kumah-Crystal of Vanderbilt University Medical Center took the conversation to another level, providing examples of how AI is helping democratize medical and pharmacy data to aid with medical advice and diagnosis. According to Dr. Kumah-Crystal, these technologies are becoming so accurate that it may soon be unethical not to include them as part of patient care. Enter the Robots — Futurist Mike Walsh predicted an increase in robot utilization in health system pharmacies over the next ten years. These technologies will help decrease the administrative burden on staff and reduce patient risk by increasing accuracy and producing predictable outcomes. The Service Model Makes Waves — Midday Symposium panelists Arpit Mehta of Allegheny General Hospital, John Jordan of TidalHealth and Rob Ritchey of Blessing Health System, highlighted the benefits of technology-enabled services to support key areas of pharmacy care (particularly in the IV Room and Specialty Pharmacy). Key advantages shared include standardization, inventory control, staffing, speed to market, and continuity of care. CSCs On the Rise — Another hot topic was the growing trend of implementing Consolidated Services Centers (CSCs) to standardize and streamline enterprise-wide pharmacy operations. Jeff Reichard of UNC Health and John Armitstead ofLee Health detailed the different CSC approaches their respective health systems take to facilitate medication distribution, reduce manual labor requirements, and increase economies of scale. Analytics are Ubiquitous — A session highlighting the results of ASHP’s national survey showed that nearly 80% of health systems are using what would be considered basic analytics. More advanced use of predictive and prescriptive analytics can help optimize pharmacy inventory and quality. How is Omnicell addressing these key issues? Learn more at https://okt.to/aCVwJt

  • "Technology augments and supplements what we do. Obviously, it doesn't replace any roles. It truly helps to supplement how we do what we do safely and effectively for our patients." ASHP Midyear: Technology Helps Leverage Medication Management, IV Compounding

  • Our Midday Symposium, Serve Up a Win – Valuable Partnerships to Drive Sterile Compounding and Specialty Pharmacy Outcomes, provided real-world experiences from pharmacy leaders on how technology-enabled services helped their health systems successfully navigate IV compounding and specialty pharmacy complexities. “Any time a human is compounding, it’s prone to error and there is a risk of touch contamination. Safety and sterility are assured with IV robotics.” -Arpit Mehta, Director of Pharmacy, Allegheny General Hospital “IV compounding requires specific expertise and the turnover we were experiencing within our pharmacy made it difficult for us to staff an automation initiative on our own. Getting the guaranteed staffing, expertise, and production through Omnicell’s IV service ensured that we could hit our compounding numbers.” -John Jordan, Senior Director of Pharmacy Services, TidalHealth “Opening our own specialty pharmacy provided a huge ROI opportunity for us. At the time, 60% of the spend for our health plan went toward specialty drugs and we didn’t fill any of them ourselves. We wanted to start treating specialty pharmacy as a revenue-generating area for our health system rather than an expense.” -Rob Ritchey, Administrative Director of Pharmacy and Supply Chain, Blessing Health System
