This week's digest includes an OHT-co-authored article showing the factors influencing One Health collaborations for preventing zoonotic diseases in India. OHT researchers and colleagues conducted a mixed qualitative study demonstrating that current One Health initiatives for zoonotic disease prevention and control in India are largely sectorally driven and dominated by human health and animal health institutions. A network analysis revealed that national One Health efforts are relatively self-contained within departments or sectors with the majority of actors having previously worked together. Key informant interviews suggested that institutional barriers to operationalizing a One Health approach to zoonotic disease prevention could be circumvented by responsible actors with high social capital who could leverage their networks to drive cross-sectoral collaborations effectively. Actionable research to improve health and well-being worldwide
About us
We live in an interconnected world: the health and well-being of the environment, animals, and humans are intertwined in ways that are becoming increasingly apparent. Tackling today’s greatest challenges—whether climate change, pandemics, or drug resistance—requires an approach that recognizes these relationships. The One Health Trust (OHT), which was founded as the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP) in 2010, uses research and stakeholder engagement to improve the health and well-being of our planet and its inhabitants. For more than a decade, OHT researchers have conducted vitally important work on major global health challenges, including Covid-19, antimicrobial resistance, hospital infections, tuberculosis, malaria, pandemic preparedness and response, vaccines, medical oxygen shortages, and noncommunicable diseases. OHT’s mandate includes issues related to climate change, biodiversity protection, and the effect of changing human diets on the planet. At OHT, we believe that answers to the world’s most critical questions lie between disciplines. Accordingly, our researchers employ a range of expertise—from economics, epidemiology, disease modeling, and risk analysis to clinical and veterinary medicine, geographic information systems, and statistics—to conduct actionable, policy-oriented research. OHT has offices in Washington, D.C.and Bangalore, India, with researchers based in North America, Africa, and Asia. Our projects lead to policy recommendations and scientific studies published in leading journals. We are experienced in addressing country-specific and regional issues as well as global challenges. Our research is renowned for innovative approaches to design and analysis, and we communicate our work to diverse stakeholders.

Did you know pneumonia is the leading cause of child deaths worldwide? According to UNICEF, 1 child dies from pneumonia every 43 seconds. Antibiotics are crucial for treating pneumonia, but antimicrobial resistance (AMR) makes them less effective. Check out our infographic to learn more about the link between pneumonia and AMR and discover solutions to tackle this growing issue. Vaccines are a powerful tool for antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) control! Last year, OHT’s Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan joined the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) AMR Exchange webinar to discuss how vaccines help prevent the spread of AMR and save lives globally. Check out the one-pager the CDC team made that highlights several quantitative findings from the webinar. Hear from Dr. Laxminarayan and other experts in this insightful discussion from the seventh session of CDC’s global AMR Exchange series. Anyone who knew Dr Tom O’Brien would agree that every word of this obituary is true. He was full of life and deeply interested in finding solutions to the problem of untreatable infections. All the attention that this problem gets today is in large part because of his pioneering work. One Health Trust

In October, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and One Health Trust hosted a two-day Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership (GARP) workshop in Nairobi, focusing on vaccines' role in tackling Antimicrobial Resistance (#AMR). Experts across Kenya came together to explore how vaccines can help fight AMR, a major challenge to Kenya’s efforts toward universal health coverage and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
