Veterans Bridge Home had the honor of interviewing retired Colonel Beau Higgins, a decorated United States Marine Corps veteran and passionate advocate for veteran employment. Beau's journey from military service to civilian leadership offers valuable insights for transitioning service members, veterans, and their families. Beau highlighted the importance of leadership, mentorship, and networking throughout his career. His experiences leading both the 1st Recon Battalion and Headquarters Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, shaped his understanding of leadership's impact on successful transitions. Notably, Beau emphasized, "Networking is only one letter away from Not working. To me, it was the key to my landing a job." He shared how organizations like Oplign, LLC, American Corporate Partners (ACP), The Honor Foundation, Hiring Our Heroes, and Hire Heroes USA have been instrumental in supporting veterans navigating career changes. Beau continues to give back by mentoring veterans and advocating for veteran employment initiatives. Another Student Veterans of America NatCon is in the books, and it was another awesome event! Grateful for the opportunity to represent Western Governors University and have some great discussions with attendees about the work WGU is doing to support Student Veterans and Military-Connected students! Our Military team is developing pathways through education, gainful employment opportunities through partnerships with employers, credit for prior learning, work with Military spouses, VA Vital, our partnership with the U.S. Naval Community College, and so much more! Our team continues to work behind the scenes to make WGU a #MilitaryFocused Higher Education Institution, and I am proud to be a part of this work! I ran into one of our WGU Alumni at the event! It was great to catch up with one of my mentors and counselors when I started to attend college for the first time, Kolin Williams!I finally got meet Stephen Westby in person, who is doing such amazing work at NYU! Looking forward to having you present about the great work you are all doing to our students! It was great to see my good friend, fellow Presidential scholar Betsy C. Montañez, and the awesome R.J. Jenkins! They both gave an amazing presentation on the Ultimate “Impostor Syndrome”: How to be a Civilian Military-Serving Professional". It was awesome to see them both present on a meaningful topic and just hit a home run with it! We also had a George W. Bush Presidential Center Stand-To and Presidential Leadership Scholar Alumni reunion! It was great to see my fellow VLP Scholars Kimberly Mitchell, Monteigne Long,Melissa Boatwright,Betsy C. Montañez, Jennifer Ballou,D’Juan Wilcher,Jennifer Renee Pluta, MS, GCDF, CMCS, and, of course the great Michael Bailey. To be a part of the program has been a blessing for me! Overall, NatCon has grown so much over the years. I have attended as a student since 2011 and later as a college staff member. To see the growth over the years is a testament to the great work that Jared Lyon and the rest of the Student Veterans of America team is doing.
