Winter has arrived in Central Oregon and High School 2 Highway trainee, Dylan Obersinner, is getting to put his new skills to work with our La Pine crew. For the last few months Dylan has been training in asphalt patching on US 97 and OR 31, and learning how traffic control plays a big part of the safety for crews working on the ground. His mentors have also been showing him how to operate different equipment, including driving 10-yard trucks in the yard. Once Dylan's year of training is complete next summer, he, along with his fellow trainees will have the skills and experience needed to meet our requirement for a Transportation Maintenance Specialist 2 role, and will be eligible to apply for a permanent position - a great way to kick off a rewarding and hands-on career. Already in his time with us, Dylan has shown us that he's very ambitious in his role for becoming a TMS 2 within ODOT and has been a hard worker, while listening and showing up for his coworkers. When we last spoke with his supervisor, he noted how he was glad to see a program like this for young adults in the community and had hoped it would continue into the future. And on that note, we're excited to announce that due to the program's success - another recruitment period will open in Summer 2025! If you know or will be an upcoming graduate next year, you won't want to miss out on the chance to be part of the High School to Highway program. Whether you're looking to kickstart your career or are simply looking to explore new opportunities, these positions are a fantastic way to make a difference. With a sneak preview like this, the new Mitchell Point Tunnel is set to become a blockbuster feature in the Historic Columbia River Highway State Trail! Last Saturday over 450 people joined us for a dedication event - providing them with an opportunity to preview the Mitchell Point Tunnel before it opens. Folks of all ages arrived at the event to take in the new tunnel segment which includes 1.5-miles of the Historic Highway State Trail perched above I-84 and carved through 655 feet of a basalt mountain that overlooks the Gorge. The new Mitchell Point tunnel is reminiscent of the historic, 1915 tunnel with five arched windows overlooking the Columbia River. Constructing a tunnel through Mitchell Point 100 years ago was an amazing feat of engineering, and re-constructing it today was not a simple task either - but soon, it will be open for future generations to experience. Anticipation for the full opening is high and the goal is to complete the work by the end of the year, but the finishing touches on this section of trail are weather dependent and could extend into 2025. We can't wait to walk and roll with you soon!
