For years, Willamette Valley Medical Center has welcomed nursing students from George Fox University for hands-on learning. But a recent group is the first to take part in an experimental program that gives them exposure to specialized training in the medical-surgery unit, the ICU, the birthing center, and the women’s clinic. Nursing students are usually placed into a single unit for training. Oregon’s hospitals are helping to grow the next generation of the health care work force.

Oregon's hospitals are proud to collaborate with legislators and other stakeholders on innovative approaches like this program to build the health care workforce, especially in rural Oregon. From the article: "To Lesley Ogden, the CEO of Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital and Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, the program will help prepare local nurses to provide better care: 'It sets you up for the leadership and the future.'" https://lnkd.in/gQ8WThPi

When 15-year-old Kasey Poe collapsed at home last December, the last thing he and his family expected was a stroke. But that’s what happened. Luckily the family got Kasey to Providence Medford Medical Center, where the emergency medicine team sprang into action. Kasey has since made a full recovery, and he and his family are grateful for the fast access to an expert care team.

Community members throughout Central Oregon were invited to a day of celebration and recognition of indigenous people on Nov. 14 at St. Charles Health System Madras. The event included a native market with artisan vendors from the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Oregon’s hospitals embrace the communities they serve to create a culture of respect and healing. https://lnkd.in/gw3eJaMP

Thanks to Rep. Christine Goodwin and other members of the Joint Task Force on Hospital Discharge Challenges for working on behalf of patients to help them receive the right care in the right setting to meet their needs. The Interim House Committee on Behavioral Health and Health Care heard the task force’s recommendations at a December Legislative Days hearing last week. Solutions to these complex issues will benefit all patients. Reps. Rob Nosse, Travis E. This month, Columbia Memorial Hospital welcomed the first group of students to its new medical assistant internship program. The program is a paid six-month internship with benefits, providing hands-on clinical training leading to certification. Oregon hospitals are dedicated to growing the health care workforce while creating opportunities for family wage jobs in Clatsop County.

Hospitals often face challenges in discharging patients to the level of care that best meets their needs. During a December Legislative Days hearing, Jimmy Jones, chair of the Joint Task Force on Hospital Discharge Challenges, testified before the Interim House Committee on Behavioral Health and Health Care. He highlighted one particularly complex issue: ensuring unhoused patients receive the appropriate care in the right setting. While there is still work to be done to address this challenge, finding a solution would benefit all facilities—hospitals, post-acute care providers, and homeless shelters—by allowing them to focus on delivering the services they are best equipped to provide. We appreciate the efforts of the task force and the committee: Reps. Rob Nosse, Christine Goodwin (who was also a member of the task force), Travis E. Nelson, Ben Bowman, Charlie Conrad, Ed Diehl, Cyrus Javadi, Hai Pham DMD, Dr Thuy Tran, and Dwayne Yunker for their work on these important issues. #orleg #orpol
