It's been a horrible start to the year for everyone here in LA, so I haven't been actively commenting on the shocking developments in social media — including Mark Zuckerberg's latest moves to further strip back trust & safety from Meta platforms, his misogynist comments about how the workplace needs to be more “masculine", and now actively allowing women to be called "property" on Instagram & Facebook. So I wanted to take a moment now to raise my digital hand with a few basic stats. First, over half of social media users are women. Second, over 80% of creators are women — in a landscape where only a small fraction of social media users ever post. Third, women account for the lion's share of purchasing power in the U.S. It baffles and angers not only me, but millions of other women online, that the men who dominate the tech world, particularly the large social media companies, continue to overlook their basic responsibility to treat women, and all marginalized people, with respect and to put a priority on our online safety.
In seeking to raise financing for Communia — an alternative social media and social health app for women — I have been told more than once that safe & healthy social media doesn't present a huge commercial opportunity. But countless women have become increasingly frustrated and angry with the large social media platforms. Now, they're literally screaming for something different and calling for boycotts of Meta platforms. Check out TikTok (in the one day Americans seem to have left) if you don't believe me, or Communia's own dramatic increase of 650% in new registered users directly following Zuckerberg's actions. If you’re concerned about the extreme path down which the large social media platforms are taking us, or if you’re someone who simply sees a market opportunity in offering a social media/social health alternative that actually meets women's needs — that improves our connections with each other and ourselves — check out what we're doing at Communia. You’re always welcome to get involved in our mission or inquire about our raise. We have a great app that is free to download — so please join over 100k supportive women who are already the backbone of our community!
