Given everything going on with Meta, X, Telegraph etc 🫠, where do we go if we want to continue to use social media without lining the pockets of unethical billionaires? And if you’re in marketing, or are a brand, how do you balance your own personal or brand values and ethics while HAVING to continue to use the Meta platform for advertising? One platform I’m exploring is Communia a social media platform created by women for women. But there must be more? ❓What other platforms are you exploring for both personal use and marketing?

It's been a horrible start to the year for everyone here in LA, so I haven't been actively commenting on the shocking developments in social media — including Mark Zuckerberg's latest moves to further strip back trust & safety from Meta platforms, his misogynist comments about how the workplace needs to be more “masculine", and now actively allowing women to be called "property" on Instagram & Facebook. So I wanted to take a moment now to raise my digital hand with a few basic stats. First, over half of social media users are women. Second, over 80% of creators are women — in a landscape where only a small fraction of social media users ever post. Third, women account for the lion's share of purchasing power in the U.S. It baffles and angers not only me, but millions of other women online, that the men who dominate the tech world, particularly the large social media companies, continue to overlook their basic responsibility to treat women, and all marginalized people, with respect and to put a priority on our online safety. In seeking to raise financing for Communia — an alternative social media and social health app for women — I have been told more than once that safe & healthy social media doesn't present a huge commercial opportunity. But countless women have become increasingly frustrated and angry with the large social media platforms. Now, they're literally screaming for something different and calling for boycotts of Meta platforms. Check out TikTok (in the one day Americans seem to have left) if you don't believe me, or Communia's own dramatic increase of 650% in new registered users directly following Zuckerberg's actions. If you’re concerned about the extreme path down which the large social media platforms are taking us, or if you’re someone who simply sees a market opportunity in offering a social media/social health alternative that actually meets women's needs — that improves our connections with each other and ourselves — check out what we're doing at Communia. You’re always welcome to get involved in our mission or inquire about our raise. We have a great app that is free to download — so please join over 100k supportive women who are already the backbone of our community! #socialmedia #femtech #womensrights #community #socialnetwork #ethicaltech #consumertech #creatoreconomy

Before the presidential election, the majority of women experienced online harassment regularly. Directly following, we've seen a dramatic further increase in online abuse - including widespread rape threats on young girls' Tiktok and Instagram accounts. It's no surprise then that Communia saw over 4x increase in growth week over week. We've also had a huge groundswell of support, with women not only signing up - but even emailing in and asking how they can angel invest. There are moments in time that are inflection points, and we're in one right now. The world will be different based on how we treat women on the internet over the next four years. Amrapali Gan, I, and the entire Communia team are dedicated to providing a safe and healthy social network for women to turn to in the midst of a vitriolic time, when many of our rights and health resources are at stake. I hope our colleagues in the broader tech industry start to take this issue seriously too. If you feel passionately about protecting women & girls and our ability to find community without abuse - don't hesitate to get in touch! Community is health, community is democracy, and community is safety. Half the population shouldn't have to isolate themselves to escape misogyny. https://lnkd.in/eQSmWBDm #onlinesafety #socialmedia #womenshealth #digitalwellbeing

All smiles and an oversubscribed TECH WEEK by a16z event earlier this week! Our panel discussion on the emerging community economy with Jacob Pace, Amrapali Gan, Andrew Kahn, and moderated by founder Olivia DeRamus is set against an era of serious concern for the future of social media. Ultimately though, the sentiment was one of deep optimism that a refocus on true community offers both a positive solution and an opportunity for a double bottom line - not just just for social media platforms, but also for creators, marketers, and businesses across industries. Key perspectives and themes included: - A shift towards higher value to smaller groups of people over attempting low value for everyone. - "Creators aren't making that much money." - Jacob Pace - A shift to peer to peer discussions and economies. - Amrapali Gan - "Not everything has to be monetized." - Andrew Kahn - A focus on community offers long term value, platform independence for creators & brands, better content, and higher conversions. - "A world with a thriving community economy empowers everyone to be active members of society, whether that's online or IRL." - Olivia DeRamus Thank you to Soho Works and Katrina Bulay for providing such a wonderful venue! #socialmedia #community #communityeconomy #creatoreconomy #latechweek #socialhealth

What a lovely post to wake up to this morning! I’m thrilled to share that Fiona has joined Communia as an investor! As we build a social media app that actually improves women’s social health, it’s been really important to me to bring on stakeholders with medical and health backgrounds as well. Building in a community of women also makes this journey so much sweeter. Looking forward to a future where everyone is connected to the social care we need to survive and thrive.

It's no secret the Community Economy is a passion. This has been reflected through clients at HOXTON and working collaboratively with Olivia DeRamus, Founder and CEO of Communia. This article perfectly touches on why platforms like Communia are the future of social media. https://lnkd.in/eHiPdsSt Takeaways: ✨ It is imperative to create safe spaces for communities to thrive and users to engage with each other ✨ Community platforms bring value to their audience in a way that's enriching (ex: asking questions or journaling on Communia) ✨ Authentic Engagement is always key. Users are moving towards niche communities that align with their interests and values, seeking genuine connections over broad social networks.
