🌍 Progress at INC-5: The Fight Against Plastic Pollution Continues At the recent Global Plastics Treaty negotiations in Busan, South Korea, world leaders debated critical issues like plastic production limits and enforcement measures. While no agreement was finalized, there’s reason for hope: most nations support a Treaty to curb unnecessary plastic production and pollution. “This is the world’s final opportunity to agree on a strategy for the Global Plastics Treaty. If no consensus is reached, we're back to square one—more plastic, more harm to the ocean, and no clear path forward,” says Emily Deery, PADI AWARE Foundation Data & Policy Specialist. “Our goal is clear: to make the treaty as strong as possible. The last step in an international plan to tackle plastic pollution head-on is happening in just a few days at the fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) — a global framework that brings nations together to agree on solutions. “Our presence at INC-5 is crucial for ocean health. Together, we can push for impactful change and ensure that the treaty delivers real results for our seas,” says Emily Deery , PADI AWARE Foundation Data & Policy Specialist.  The PADI AWARE policy team is heading to the meeting in Busan, South Korea, to ensure that our ocean priorities are heard loud and clear. Our Adopt the Blue program serves as the connective tissue driving forward the PADI Blueprint for Ocean Action. In partnership with Blancpain, the program aims to establish a global inventory of underwater sites, collecting information on locations, ecosystems, and emerging conservation issues. Adopt the Blue will identify potential MPAs, if not already protected, helping governments to meet their international conservation commitments. These sites are supported through community grants, citizen science programs, targeted conservation projects, and policy advocacy campaigns, all underpinned by our goals on climate change, marine debris, coral reef restoration, and the protection of habitats and vulnerable species.
