"A strong, accessible, affordable health care system is the foundation of any community. Without a strong health care presence, we cannot attract new investments, foster economic development, and keep or attract residents to our communities. Health care is essential to both chart a new future for communities that are struggling and support communities that are currently stable. "So it was an honor to speak with attendees at the PA Mountains Rural Health Conference about how impactful collaborative work can be as we all work towards our shared goal of serving people in our communities. When I was training to be a physician, I spent time learning in rural hospitals and communities. Health care is a cornerstone of these communities, and the Shapiro Administration is committed to strengthening this critical, life-sustaining infrastructure for the Pennsylvanians who call our rural communities home." - DHS Secretary Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH Indiana University of Pennsylvania
DHS Secretary Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH recently joined the Pennsylvania Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs (DDAP) at Pennsylvania’s Emerging Drug Trends Symposium, an annual event centered on the latest information regarding the current drug supply, state and federal initiatives to address the substance use disorder (SUD) landscape, how to best identify gaps and disparities in SUD services, and more. https://bit.ly/3Z8VmTM “Too many of our fellow Pennsylvanians are impacted by substance use disorders that affect their lives, and the lives of their families, friends, and communities. In order to get people the care they need to achieve stability in recovery, we must stay attuned to what people are experiencing every day,” said Secretary Arkoosh. “DHS is proud to work with our fellow Commonwealth agencies like DDAP, with community organizations, treatment providers, and so many others, to keep up on emerging trends, to break down silos and barriers that keep people from potentially life-saving treatment, and to make sure that all Pennsylvanians are healthy, safe, and thriving.”

"It was so great to meet and talk with the grantees that administer the Women’s Service Program as they are working to advance accessible and inclusive women’s health care across Pennsylvania. The Women’s Service Program provides women with empathetic, culturally informed care and support no matter their background, identity, or income, and specifically seeks to assist pregnant women and new mothers through the critical prenatal and postpartum periods. "These grantees have the necessary relationships and experience to establish programs and partnerships that reflect the diverse needs of women in their counties and communities, and these regional-based grants help connect more people to the high-quality care they deserve." - DHS Secretary Valerie Arkoosh, MD, MPH
