”Whether or not central banks are mandated to support government policies on a greener economy, an ecological transition will be a necessary precondition to stabilise the macroeconomy in the long run.” In their feature for Alliance magazine’s latest issue, researchers Mohammed Quaisar from Council on Economic Policies and Lydia Marsden from UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) outline the need to revisit central bank mandates of maintaining price and financial stability change in the face of escalating ecological crises. They reflect on actions already taken by some central banks towards realigning their objectives and tools, and highlight how philanthropic support continues to be crucial for this work. Key takeaways from their article: 📈 Environmental and climate risks are already translating into financial and price instability, through materialising physical and transition risks as well as climateflation, fossilflation and greenflation. Without action, these threats will disrupt economies worldwide. 🌏 Some central banks have started evolving their policies to address these challenges. Institutions like the European Central Bank and Bank of England are integrating climate considerations into asset purchases and banking regulations, and the Bank of Japan launched a climate lending facility in 2021. However, these policies do not adequately reflect the scale of the threats we face. 💡 Continued philanthropic support for research, advocacy, and policy innovation in this area is essential. To ensure a stable and sustainable economy, central banks must accelerate green investments and strengthen coordination with governments. Despite the recent withdrawal of the FED from the Network for Greening the Financial System (NGFS), the challenges remain the same. How are civil society and philanthropy pushing central banks to rise to the challenges ahead, and what more could we do? 🔗 https://lnkd.in/eYYbSptg 👇 #SustainableFinance #ClimateRisk #CentralBanking #GreenEconomy

“Authoritarian and populist movements are gaining momentum partly because the economy has stopped working for people. So, reforming the economic system is an urgent task for cohesion and functioning democracies. How are we going to do it?” As guest editors of the latest issue of Alliance magazine, Partners for a New Economy’s Jo Swinson and Crystal Simeoni from The Nawi Collective, in conversation with Laura Carvalho from Open Society Foundations and Paul Shrivastava from The Club of Rome reflect on these fundamental questions: Why do we need economic systems change, how will change come about, and what role should philanthropy play in enabling the transformation? ⛓️💥 the global economic system is unequivocally exacerbating the climate crisis, ecological destruction, and perpetrating inequality. A system founded upon the exploitation of people along gender, race and class lines can never deliver on the wellbeing of all people, 🌟 repurposing institutions – all the way from rethinking the role of the state to overhauling the missions of individual corporations – will be essential smaller pieces to realising an economic paradigm shift on a macro level, 🤲 for better or worse, philanthropy has played a large role in shaping our economic system as it stands today. Similarly, if employed mindfully, philanthropy can be used to catalyse change towards an economic system that delivers on the #wellbeing for the planet and all people. What’s your take on these questions? #NewEconomy (https://lnkd.in/eZtKsKBk):
