Pre-eclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication caused by insufficient blood flow to the placenta, affects 3-5% of pregnancies and is a leading cause of still- and premature births worldwide. Kelsey Swingle, a doctoral student in the lab of Michael J. Mitchell, Associate Professor in Bioengineering, is pioneering research on lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) to deliver mRNA therapeutics to the placenta. This innovative approach has shown promising results in reducing high maternal blood pressure and improving fetal health in pre-eclamptic mice. “At this stage in our research, we would bring this LNP to larger animals such as rats and guinea pigs first to determine how well it works in the ‘gold standard’ models of pre-eclampsia before we could advance this work to human trials,” says Swingle. Swingle and her team aim to refine this therapy for future use in humans, offering hope for better maternal and fetal outcomes. Read the full story today. https://bit.ly/3BpumI1
