On View: Wanda Gág: Art for Life’s Sake Best known for Millions of Cats—the oldest children’s book still in print in the United States—Gág was also a fiercely independent artist, creating surreal still lifes, sweeping landscapes, and intimate scenes of everyday life. For the first time, the museum showcases its unparalleled collection of Wanda Gág’s drawings, highlighting the magic of her distinctive sandpaper technique. For Gág, drawing was more than an artistic practice—it was a necessity, a force that shaped her days, derailed other plans, and filled her with joy. 🖼️ "Alfie's Flowers (Window Plants)," 1927, Wanda Gág 📍 Galleries 221-223 Learn more: https://bit.ly/40WS7Qf

Museum Bowl 2025 has officially kicked off! Alongside Super Bowl LIX, this Sunday brings a historic rematch between The Philadelphia Museum of Art and Kansas City's The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, vying once again for glory — and art. As part of our friendly wager aligned with the NFL rematch, the losing museum will loan the victor a yet-to-be-announced work from their collection, to go on display later this year. Opening Feb 8: Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective This exhibition, the largest of Christina Ramberg’s work to date, will illuminate the artist’s encyclopedia of imagery exploring experiences of gender, sexuality, and normative ideals of female beauty. Often associated with the Chicago Imagists, Ramberg’s meticulous, highly stylized paintings push beyond pop culture references into something more intimate and enigmatic. Corsets, hairstyles, and hands become both fetishized forms and abstract figures, hinting at the power dynamics embedded in everyday aesthetics. As she once wrote in her diary, her work lives within the friction of opposing forces: “abandon / restraint, concealment / revelation, strong / weak, chaos / order.” Experience Christina Ramberg: A Retrospective at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, February 8–June 1. 📍 Galleries 150 - 155, First Floor. 🎟️ Plan your visit: https://bit.ly/4hlCclP Christina Ramberg; A Retrospective is organized by the Art Institute of Chicago. The organizing curators are Thea Liberty Nichols, Associate Research Curator, Modern and Contemporary Art and Mark Pascale, Janet and Craig Duchossois Curator, Prints and Drawings, at the Art Institute of Chicago. In Philadelphia, the exhibition is curated by Eleanor Nairne, Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Curator for Modern and Contemporary Art and Head of Department with Camila Rondon, Departmental Coordinator for Modern and Contemporary Art.

🌏 What do dragons, phoenixes, and qilins reveal about our shared human experience? Mythical creatures have long been central to cultures around the globe, offering ways to interpret the mysteries of life and the natural world. Our latest exhibition, Mythical Creatures: China and the World, explores the theme of diversity by comparing legendary creatures across cultures. In our latest video, Hiromi Kinoshita, the Hannah L. and J. Welles Henderson Curator of Chinese Art, delves into the significance of these fantastical beings and how they connect stories from China, Japan, Korea, South and Southeast Asia, Persia, and Western Europe. From elaborately embroidered costumes and silver headdresses to contemporary works by Xu Bing and Ai Weiwei, the exhibition juxtaposes tradition and modernity, showcasing how mythical creatures reflect cultural identity and creativity across time and place. 🎥 Watch the video to discover more: https://lnkd.in/eAVwPyw2 This exhibition is on view through June 2025. Explore how these creatures—while diverse in form—serve a universal purpose: helping humans make sense of the world. #MythicalCreatures #ChineseArt #ArtExhibition #ArtHistory #PhiladelphiaMuseumOfArt
