What is the Hib (Haemophilus influenza type b) vaccine? The first Hib vaccine, a pure polysaccharide version, was introduced in the U.S. in 1985 but was replaced in 1987 due to its lower efficacy. The Hib conjugate vaccine that followed has significantly reduced the number of reported cases of Hib infections. However, research has indicated that widespread vaccination may be associated with an increase in non-type b Haemophilus influenzae strains.
