National nonprofit. We provide free peer support & resources for kids impacted by their parent or guardian's cancer.
About us
Pickles Group’s mission is to provide free peer-to-peer support and resources to kids and teens impacted by their parent or caregiver’s cancer. Having a parent with cancer can be a lonely, isolating experience. Pickles Group creates thriving communities of kids supporting kids. Pickles kids strengthen resilience, have fun with friends who get them, and heal along the way. One in twenty kids will experience a parent’s cancer diagnosis before they graduate high school. With more than 3 million children and teens in the U.S. who are affected, there is an overwhelming need for the support we provide. The idea for Pickles started with the kids in 2019. While navigating their own cancer diagnoses, Pickles’ founding parents saw that their kids shared a common sense of isolation. The kids felt alone among peers who didn’t understand their scary new world. One of the kids said, “I wish we could get to know other kids who understand what this is like.” Within a month, Pickles held its first regular group meeting. As the kids continued to meet, the change the founding families saw was unmistakable—together they experienced laughter, community, and a sense of relief that they hadn’t felt in a long time. Please visit our website to enroll, learn more, donate, volunteer, refer families, and learn how you can help us reach more kids and families at a time when they can benefit most.

Chance Foy, age 7, joined Pickles Group this fall after his mom, Fern, was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer. Fern lost her own grandfather to cancer when she was around Chance’s age. Fern’s grandfather was a pillar of their family, and the trauma of that cancer experience had a huge impact on her. Fern’s family never really had the resources they needed to process that experience and heal from it. Fern wanted Chance’s experience with her cancer to be different. “Besides going through my cancer, Chance has a lot that he is going through in his life. To be able to make sense of what is going on and where he is with me in his life has really been beneficial. Questions like ‘what is cancer?’ Pickles helped express and validate what is going on in his life, and how that affects him and how he feels about it. One thing Pickles helped him understand is that this is not his fault. As children they might come to think that cancer is their fault somehow, and they feel helpless and powerless. Pickles has helped empower him to understand what is going on and what he can do about it… We are so, so grateful.” More than 3 million kids across the US like Chance face the isolation, fear, and the stress of a parent's cancer diagnosis – and more parents than ever have cancer. You have the power to help us raise $500,000 to close the gap so we can provide a caring community of support to 800 more Pickles Kids and Teens in 2025 by donating to support our Mission: Double the Impact end-of-year giving campaign before December 31. What about the kids? Oncology social workers, nurses, and physicians tell us that is the first question their parenting patients ask when they’re diagnosed with cancer. There’s no easy answer, but parents, caregivers, and their kids deserve quality support. That’s why we’re committed to arming healthcare professionals with tools, resources, and actionable steps to take to better support parenting patients and their kids. Don’t miss our popular free training for clinicians and healthcare providers today on Wednesday, December 4 at noon CDT. Link to RSVP. https://lnkd.in/g5ipb4hC

Adrian Lagos, age 14, was one of the very first kids to join Pickles Group when we launched in 2021. His mom, Christine, was diagnosed with Stage IV Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in January that year. Hoping for a system of support for Adrian, Christine enrolled Adrian in Pickles Group. Adrian has been part of Pickles Group ever since, and because of you, this year he became one of our first Peer Leaders, welcoming new Pickles Kids to our community. “It was especially helpful for Adrian to feel and know that there were other kids going through the same kind of experiences, and to be able to ask questions anonymously about cancer, questions that him and other children didn't feel comfortable asking their cancer patient parents. As he’s gotten older, Adrian has been wanting to find more service and leadership type roles. When given this opportunity [to become a Pickles Peer Leader] it made sense to him since [Pickles] is something that he's familiar with. [At Pickles] he feels like he can help other children with since he's gone through it himself.” Today kids like Adrian are healing at Pickles Group because of you – and they’re paying it forward by healing other kids like them along the way. More than 3 million kids across the US like Adrian face the isolation, fear, and the stress of a parent's cancer diagnosis – and more parents than ever have cancer. You have the power to double your impact today by helping us secure a major $50,000 matching gift from a generous Pickles champion. Your gift on Giving Tuesday will go twice as far towards our goal to raise $500,000 by December 31 so we can provide a caring community of support to 800 more Pickles Kids and Teens in 2025.
