On 13th and 14th December 2024, over 50 youth from the National Youth Union participated in a Leadership Skills Training organized by Plan International in collaboration with the #Ministry_of_Youth_and_Sports. The training aimed to equip the young people with transformational leadership skills to inspire change and build strong, capable youth leaders who will drive positive transformation in their communities and beyond. Plan International remains committed to supporting youth development and strengthening its partnership with the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ensure continued opportunities for young leaders.

We're deeply humbled by the appreciation from the community at Chum-Aliny Primary School in Renk County, where we run a child-friendly space for refugees, returnees, and IDPs impacted by the Sudan crisis. With support from #UNICEF, Plan International has provided vital support to 126 vulnerable children, adolescents, and survivors of violence with services like psychosocial support, cash assistance and life skills training and we’re ensuring these young lives are not forgotten.

One in three women and girls have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV), non-partner violence or both. This leads to a big number of the Women and girls sustaining physical and psychological damage and sometimes death. It is our collective responsibility to see that all women and girls are safe from Gender-based violence (GBV) and that they live in a safe and just world. In South Sudan, families are struggling as relentless flooding continues to displace thousands, leaving them without homes and access to basic necessities and services. “Our home and all our property are destroyed, we have nothing. We are depending on water lilies for food and drinking dirty water”, says 18 years old Nyamuje. Without immediate assistance, families will continue to struggle to access essential services, increasing the risk of disease and hunger. This flood crisis calls for urgent support and intervention for those affected. According to UNOCHA 1 million people have been affected by the devastating floods.

As of 2023, UNICEF estimates that 2.8 million children-over 70% of South Sudan’s school-aged population are out of school, with girls representing the majority of those affected. One significant barrier to girls' education is the lack of sanitary products during their menstrual cycles. Without access to sanitary towels, many girls are unable to attend school regularly, leading them to fall behind, drop out permanently, or face the increased risk of child marriage. In response, Plan International distributed dignity kits to help girls manage their periods with confidence and continue their education. “Now I am free at school; I attend my lessons and can even walk freely during my period,” says Athiei, 17.-, one of the girls who received the kits. Every girl deserves access to education, and nothing should prevent them from achieving their dreams. By supporting girls with dignity kits, we can help ensure they stay in school and succeed.

As we prepare for the 16 Days of Activism Campaign starting on 25th November, we want to remind everyone that Ending violence against women and girls is possible, if we unite and act now. Girls and women are more vulnerable to gender subjected violence especially those living in humanitarian emergency contexts. Children and girls who survive often struggle to come to terms with what they have been through. It is time we confront this. #UniteForPeace #ActNow

“The climate crisis is not gender-neutral. Women and girls experience the greatest impacts of climate change, which amplifies existing gender inequalities and poses unique threats to their livelihoods, health, and safety.” Said Yama (21) one of the youngest panelists and a member of Plan’s Youth Advisory Panel (YAP) Yama shared her thoughts during the Annual Women Leaders Conference organized by Eve Organization for women in partnership with Plan International and Ministry of Gender Child and Social Welfare under the theme “Forging collaboration for advancing women leadership for lasting peace and security in South Sudan” As part of the activities a panel discussion was organized and one of the Key issues discussed was the Impact of climate change on women and girls. During climate crises, underlying factors like forced displacement, hunger and poverty do exacerbate the already existing issue of gender inequality. We therefore as Plan International commit to support women and girls through our interventions by empowering young girls and women for positive change.

Empowering girls and supporting their vision for the future Meet Akuach Miabek, 17 who took over the role of Canadian Ambassador for a day. As part of her engagements, she held a meeting with ambassadors from 4 embassies; Canada, UK, Norway and France. They discussed issues around child protection focusing on child marriages, early and unintended pregnancies, girls’ education and girls’ participation in decision-making. Akuach is an advocate on girl rights and young mothers, she called for action to stop stigma on young mothers and highlighted how early and unintended pregnancy and social rejection can affect girls’ life and future. “I always tell girls that becoming a mother at young age does not stop you or disqualify you from continuing your education, your future is still ahead keep on dreaming big and working hard towards achieving your dreams because girls have great potentials”. Akuach was inspired after meeting H.E. Joanne Minns, the Canadian Ambassador and CFLI partners Ms. Jackline Naswia Executive Director of Centre for Inclusive Governance, Justice and Peace (CIGJP). “This opportunity made me believe that I can be anything I want if I dream big and work hard for it’ she said. #IDG2024 #DayOfTheGirlChild #GirlsVisionForTheFuture
