I had fun talking with Jennifer Wolff and George Cusack about how I'm approaching AI and some of the steps on my learning journey -- from a philosophy course I took as an undergraduate at Smith College to the Playlab AI professional learning community I participated in this fall. I love this example of Playlab AI’s impact on education in challenging environments: Emmanuel Kimuli, lead teacher at Uganda’s largest refugee school, uses Playlab daily to create AI tools. These empower his staff to deliver concrete learning experiences for South Sudanese and Congolese refugee students. I am proud to be part of a team that puts transformative technology directly into the hands of people who can best leverage it to open doors and create opportunities for those who need it most. Open source AI tools offer new possibilities for how we teach and learn, but new learning for educators will be key to effective and student-centered adoption. According to a survey by Educators for Excellence, only 14% of teachers currently feel confident with AI, while 58% are looking for more training, particularly in lesson planning and differentiated instruction. Our recent AI Design Sprint with Playlab AI brought together more than 100 educators, students, district leaders, peer organizations, and philanthropic support organizations to explore how AI can reinforce and elevate the uniquely human aspects of teaching. Have you heard of Playlab AI? If not, you have to check it out. I love their focus on building tools for educators that allow for the responsible use of AI! It allowed me to build two AI chatbots tailored to specific needs in minutes. I can’t wait to work on it more to fine-tune and test those tools!
