I had the great opportunity to join Alan Ross and Ron Harper, P.Eng., C.Dir. 🇨🇦 for the Power Panel Discussion of Power Systems Technology on the rapidly evolving electric power industry and the crucial role of grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) in driving the energy transition. The global demand for GOES is soaring, fueled by the accelerating shift to renewable energy and electrification. Over my meantime 12 years working with GOES, I’ve seen the industry moving from the Chinese grid expansion boom in 2005-2009, the slow decline in the 2010´s to rapid growth since 2021. Particularly as the need for transformers increases with the rise of renewables, electric vehicles, data centers, and AI technologies. This energy transition is not just a trend—it’s a global shift that is here to stay. 𝐃𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰, 𝐓𝐎𝐆𝐄𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑? Our partnerships along the value chain for transformers, for example with JFE Shoji Canada, is a prime example of how collaboration in the steel industry is key to supporting this transformation, the transformer maker and their customers, the utilities/TSO/DSO. Next to growth, the big challenge ahead is 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. As the industry evolves, the question is not if we’ll commit to decarbonization, but how we’ll make it happen among the entire value chain of transformers. This is an exciting time for the green steel movement, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of driving sustainable energy solutions. When a power outage strikes, the impact on both utilities and customers is immediate. However, what if there was a way to predict and prevent these disruptions before they happen? A recent UK study on the distribution network reveals how data-driven strategies and predictive tools can make that possible. Through leveraging EA Technology’s Target Model® to assess two 11kV feeders, the study highlights simple optimisations, such as strategic switch placement, that can significantly reduce customer interruptions. The results emphasise the importance of predictive maintenance for improving network performance. For utilities, the advantage is clear: harness robust data analytics to fuel smarter, proactive decisions. From isolating faults with added switches, to upgrading high-risk lines, the right decisions can cost-effectively drastically reduce downtime and enhance service reliability. Do you want to learn how combining historical data, asset monitoring, and predictive tools can future-proof your network? Then read our latest article ‘Optimizing Network Reliability and Reducing Customer Interruptions: A Case Study of a UK Distribution Network’, written by Dr David Mills CEng MIET, Head of Net Zero Transition and Dr Waqas Javed, Senior Consultant and team lead at EA Technology. Discover how actionable insights can help utilities optimise their systems and meet the demand of tomorrow’s power landscape here: https://lnkd.in/d9PgQd_V
