Join us for the lecture, Toshiko Mori: Balancing Act! Architects often work to cross boundaries, territories and expertise to gather and unite communities– and buildings often work as elements of connections, transitions, integrations, and a gathering of diverse people, culture, and opinions. When our work becomes dynamic and breaks free from its static fate, we can witness these convergences- and these interactions are often invisible yet vital for the continuous occupation and programming of architecture. WHEN: THURS MAR 6, 2025 @ 6:15 PM WHERE: Higgins Hall Auditorium Learn more here: https://lnkd.in/eE6CUMaM Subscribe to our monthly newsletter to learn about our upcoming events: https://lnkd.in/e5TzArK7 @Toshiko Mori is founder and principal of TOSHIKO MORI ARCHITECT PLLC. She is the Robert P. Hubbard Professor in the Practice of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and was chair of the Department of Architecture (2002–2008). Her firm’s work includes libraries, museums, universities, workspaces, master planning, and residences. Mori has been a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences since 2016 and the American Academy of Arts and Letters since 2020, where she is currently vice president of architecture. As a member and former chair of the World Economic Forum's Global Agenda Council on Design, Mori addresses scarcity-driven design, the future of cities and urban information systems, and the role of the arts in improving communities. This morning, I had the opportunity to present to about 35 MArch students at Pratt Institute, invited by Kimberlae Saul, AIA and Carisima Koenig AIA. They asked me to share my experiences in starting and managing my own architecture firm. In preparing for the talk, I spent several evenings reflecting on the 22 years since taking that pivotal step in 2002. Along the way, many individuals have influenced, inspired, and supported me—mentors, colleagues, and of course, the clients, consultants, and builders who have collaborated on our work. From Sara and the HDG experience to Justin Brown, my first-ever hire, and the many others who have been part of this story, I am deeply appreciative. Thank you.

Thanks so much for joining us!
Grateful for the opportunity to be part of a compelling panel discussion last night at Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture. A sincere thank you to Chair Stephen Slaughter for the warm welcome (and the ride!), as well as President Frances Bronet, Dean Quilian Riano, and Director of the Master in Landscape Architecture Rosetta S. Elkin for their thoughtful and timely remarks—especially resonant in today’s political climate. It was a privilege to engage in conversation following Walter Hood’s powerful presentation on the “African Ancestors Garden” design process and book. His work set the stage for an engaging dialogue alongside Signe Nielsen and an incredibly engaged audience at Higgins Hall Auditorium. Appreciative of the support from Francesca, Jason, Ryo, Andrea, Tak, Michele, Gabriele, Ale, and John—your presence made the evening even more meaningful. Thank you to Pratt for hosting such an inspiring evening. Pratt Institute Quilian Riano Rosetta S. transects How do we relate to each other across disciplines, scales, densities, environments and communities? As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the School of Architecture in the 2024-2025 academic year, we invite our community to join us as we explore transects – the connections across, within, and outside of our school – through diverse programs and departments. We will lay out the various approaches to dealing with some of the pressing issues faced by the built environment. A transect cuts across territories at scales from the domestic to the city, from the individual plant to an ecosystem, from an individual course through an entire curriculum and across disciplines. It is a way to, through the cut, bring immense diversity together. Join us as we connect across and within disciplines and find out what a cut through our connections looks like and discussions on what is driving our transects now and into the future.
