"[How do we] shift the primary focus from top-down — regulating the change we want to see — toward bottom-up: co-generating and embodying the change we want to see?" "Instead of government being the primary instigator of societal change, businesses, civil society, and leaders across institutions must learn how to work together, how to organize around shared awareness and intentions across many institution and sector boundaries. Obviously, the choice is not either-or. But the primary emphasis of change making may shift toward building collective capacity for bottom-up cross-sector innovation, for organizing around shared intention. At the end of the day, what happens in politics is shaped by social movements, and what happens in these movements is shaped by what happens on the ground, by our capacity to create living examples of what we want to see locally, in our bioregions, and beyond." In 2018 some colleagues and I co-founded the Ubuntu. Lab Institute which is the Africa Regional School for the Presencing Institute. The inspiration of birthing this initiative was born from the realisation that Africa was underrepresented in the Global Movement of Change Makers that the Presencing Institute was building through an online programme of facilitating profound change using Theory U. Theory U also known as the U process is a methodology that can be used to move from intention into action. The methodology can be applied at individual, team, or organisation levels by businesses, government and international organisations. Ubuntu.Lab Institute was, therefore, initiated with the aim of co-creating Africa’s future by training Change Makers across the Continent. We have so far run 6 cohorts since 2018 and reached over 2000 Change Makers. All the 6 cohorts have been online apart from Cohort 1 which had both online and a 3 days in person programme in Lusaka Zambia. Recognising that the online programme that runs for 6 months may not be ideal for all that are committed to transforming Africa, we have decided to run an in person programme in Kampala from March 3 - 6, 2025.
