  • New Quick Behavior Tip! Today’s topic: Pre-Correction Strategies. Ever notice certain situations where problem behaviors are more likely to occur? Pre-correction strategies help you stay ahead of the curve by addressing potential challenges before they arise. Example: If transitions are difficult for a student, remind them of expectations right before the change. “In two minutes, we’ll line up quietly to head to lunch.” Procedure: 1️⃣ Identify the Trigger – Recognize situations where challenges tend to occur. 2️⃣ Set Clear Expectations – Provide reminders about appropriate behavior beforehand. 3️⃣ Reinforce Success – Acknowledge and praise when the behavior meets expectations. • 🚨 MYTH vs REALITY: Behavior and Crisis Management Misconceptions 🚨 When it comes to crisis management, misconceptions can lead to unsafe practices and missed opportunities for prevention. 🛑 ❌ MYTH: Physical interventions are the core of crisis management. ✅ FACT: Physical interventions should always be a last resort, with prevention and de-escalation as the focus. ❌ MYTH: Punishment is the fastest way to stop problem behavior. ✅ FACT: Punishment may stop behavior temporarily, but positive reinforcement and proactive strategies are more effective for long-term success. ❌ MYTH: Hands-off policies ensure safety, fairness, and transparency. ✅ FACT: Hands-off policies can lead to underreporting of restraints, increased use of medication, law enforcement involvement, and even denial of services for individuals with high levels of aggression. 💡 Key Takeaway: Effective crisis management is proactive, preventative, and behaviorally informed—not reactive or reliant on punishment. 📢 Share this post to help debunk these myths and promote safer, evidence-based practices in crisis management! 🌐Want to learn more about crisis prevention and de-escalation strategies that actually work? • In this episode of The Crisis in Education Podcast, Dr. Paulie sits down with behavior analyst and education expert Steve Ward to discuss practical strategies for supporting teachers and students—especially those with special needs—while highlighting lessons that apply to all classrooms. They dive into the critical role of assent and assent withdrawal, exploring how these concepts can be observed, measured, and taught to both teachers and parents. Steve emphasizes the importance of respecting a learner's right to say "no" and, more importantly, how to reintroduce expectations in ways that build trust, confidence, and engagement. The conversation also challenges traditional approaches to learning by making a compelling case for expanding fun—particularly social fun—as a primary goal. By prioritizing enjoyment and meaningful interactions, educators can create positive ripple effects that go far beyond preparing students to complete tasks. Tune in to learn actionable strategies, from fluency-building formats to incorporating games and routines, that help turn novelty and unpredictability into opportunities for growth. Whether you're a teacher, parent, or school leader, this episode offers insights you can apply right away to make learning more effective and enjoyable for all students. #assent #education #behaviormanagement #fun #fluency #pcma https://lnkd.in/e9JExK-K

  • New Year, Smarter Approaches: Moving Beyond Policy Changes Many people focus on creating policies and providing 1-day crisis management trainings to reduce restraints and improve safety. But while well-intended, there’s more to it. Policies and brief trainings alone don’t prevent crises—preparation and fluency do. Therefore, it’s time to move beyond simple policy changes and surface-level training to focus on real prevention—prevention that keeps behaviors from escalating in the first place. Check out PCMA’s latest Behavioral Brief Newsletter and be sure to subscribe for more insights on creating safer, more effective environments. #CrisisPrevention #BehavioralScience #PCMA #BehaviorManagement #SchoolSafety #CrisisManagement #PositiveBehavior #PreventionFirst #StaffTraining #BehaviorAnalysis

  • Big goals don’t happen overnight—they’re built step-by-step. Processes are made up of tasks, and tasks are made up of behaviors. When we reinforce the small behaviors that drive progress, we build momentum and create lasting change. Example: Imagine teaching a student to organize their desk. Instead of focusing only on the final result, break it down: Procedure: 1️⃣ Identify the process (organizing the desk). 2️⃣ Break it into tasks (clearing papers, sorting supplies, wiping the surface). 3️⃣ Reinforce behaviors within each task (picking up one item, putting it in the right spot). By focusing on these smaller steps, you’ll keep motivation high and guide success one behavior at a time. #BehaviorTips #ReinforceProgress #SmallStepsBigResults #BehaviorScience #PCMA

  • The Holiday Season: A Time of Joy or Stress for Our Children? As the holidays approach, many of our children are heading home to environments that may not feel safe or supportive. For some, school is more than a place of learning—it’s their sanctuary, offering stability, structure, and care. For students who face tough conditions at home, the holiday break can be a time of increased stress and uncertainty. As educators, caregivers, and advocates, what can we do to help these students prepare for the challenges they may encounter during this time? How can we ensure they feel supported and remembered before they leave school for the break? We’d love to hear your thoughts. Share your strategies, experiences, or ideas in the comments. Together, we can build a community of care for those who need it most.
