  • 🤖💡𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀 𝗚𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁 💡🤖 Did you know that even the smartest algorithms can pick up some pretty outdated attitudes? A recent article of Genevieve Smith and Ishita Rustagi published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review dives deep into how and why AI systems, built to help us, can sometimes end up reinforcing gender biases. From hiring platforms to search engines, AI often reflects the world it’s trained on—meaning it sometimes mirrors society’s gender inequalities rather than advancing gender equity 🌐. The article "𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗔𝗹𝗴𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗺𝘀 𝗚𝗼 𝗦𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁" highlights specific examples of gender bias in AI systems: 𝟭. 𝗩𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: These systems, commonly used in healthcare and automotive industries, tend to perform poorly for women due to biased training data. This results in lower service quality for female users, as the AI systems are not as accurate in understanding female voices compared to male voices. 𝟮. 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲: AI systems used for recruitment can exhibit gender bias by deprioritizing women's job applications. This happens because these systems are often trained on historical data that reflects existing biases in the workplace, leading to skewed results. For instance, if past hiring favoured male candidates, the AI model will likely replicate this pattern, reinforcing gender inequalities rather than offering an unbiased assessment. 𝟯. 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲: Neutral terms like "doctor" and "nurse" are translated with gendered biases, reinforcing stereotypes (e.g., male doctors and female nurses). ✨🔍𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗱𝗼? For starters, it’s all about better data and smarter design! By ensuring algorithms are trained on balanced and representative datasets, developers can make AI systems that truly support equality and fairness. Besides feminist data practices and gender-inclusive AI literacy, policy intervention can mitigate these biases. You can read more about the article of Genevieve Smith and Ishita Rustagi here: https://lnkd.in/eZnCJ2e 🧠✨ Let’s help shape an AI-driven future where everyone is represented fairly! #reinforcestereotypes #genderinequality #womeninAI #genderbias #empoweringwomen #inclusivity #genderequity #STREAMIT

🔍✨ 𝗔𝗜 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝟮𝟭𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆: 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗼𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺? ✨🔍 A new UNESCO study reveals an unexpected twist in the rise of GenerativeAI: the risk of regressive gender stereotypes! Rather than pushing boundaries, many AI models are mirroring outdated biases that don’t align with today’s push for equality. From stereotyped career roles (think “nurse” 👩⚕️ vs. “engineer” 👨🔧) to assumptions about personality traits, AI appears to be drawing from outdated frameworks and assumptions. 🌱 𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗮𝘄𝗮𝘆? We have the power to shape AI responsibly. By training these models with diverse, unbiased data, we can guide AI towards becoming a true tool of the future—reflecting all of us fairly. The article of UNESCO proposes several measures to address gender bias in AI, including: 🔸 Developing AI models with more diverse and representative datasets. 🔸 Implementing transparency in AI algorithms to detect and mitigate bias. 🔸 Encouraging collaboration between AI developers, policymakers, and civil society to create ethical guidelines. 🔸 Promoting educational initiatives to raise awareness about gender bias in AI systems. • 📢As part of STREAM IT campaign "Inspire and Empower the Next Generation of Women in STEM Education". 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗜. The campaign aligns with World Science Day for Peace and Development, focusing on gender bias in AI. This issue has been a significant topic in the scientific discussions over the past year, influencing society's views on gender roles in ways that are frequently overlooked. 👩💻✨ 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗜? ✨👩💻 If you were wondering about the gender gap in AI, the study of Dr. Erin Young, Prof. Judy Wajcman and Laila Sprejer (2021) can show you eye-opening insights. Turns out, 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝘆 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻, and this underrepresentation could impact the future of AI in unexpected ways. When women are missing from the room, the technology being developed can overlook female perspectives, reinforcing bias rather than breaking it. 🧠🚀 𝗦𝗼, 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗴𝗮𝗽? The study suggests fostering inclusive learning environments, mentorship programs, and policies that bring more women into the field. Let’s make AI a field where everyone’s voice can be heard! 💪🏽💼 Read more about the gender gap in AI on the website of The Alan Turing Institute: https://lnkd.in/db74K_3 #gendergap #womeninAI #genderbias #futureofAI #empoweringwomen #inclusivity #STREAMIT
