Solutions to prevent recalcitrant Organic Mobile Industrial chemicalS for CE in the Soil-sediment-water system
About us
PROMISCES aims to understand the origins, routes and fates of pollutants which spread easily in the environment and are very persistent. The Horizon 2020-funded project is developing technologies to remove these pollutants from soils, sediments, surface- and groundwater, since they can be harmful to human health: • “PROMISCES aims to enable a safe circular economy for the soil-sediment-water cycle.” • “PROMISCES will develop, test and demonstrate in the field, under “real-life conditions”, key technologies and innovations to monitor, prevent and remediate industrial persistent and mobile and potentially toxic (iPM(T)s) pollutants in the soil-sediment-water system.” • “PROMISCES is centred around seven representative case studies in different European regions linked with chemical pollution challenges. The project will support the sustainability roadmap of urbanised areas by reducing the environmental impacts on waters (surface and groundwater, urban runoff, wastewater, landfill leachate), soils (contaminated sites, brownfields) and dredged sediments (river, sea-ports).” • “PROMISCES will provide concepts for zero-pollution circularity applied to waters (e.g. water reuse for irrigation, bank filtration for drinking water supply) and complex solid matrices (land recycling, nutrient recovery from sewage sludge, dredged sediment valorisation) across the private and public sectors.” • “PROMISCES will have a particular focus on PFAS compounds that reflects the urgent need for better management of historic and current pollutant emissions within the different circular economy routes. The focus on other iPM(T)s reflects the need to apply lessons learned from PFAS threats to human health to a wider range of chemicals, including those replacing PFAS after the EU-wide ban on usage and production”.

📢 PFAS: A Challenge We Can’t Ignore 💡 Our #WaterProjectsEurope side event “PFAS Solutions: Technologies and Policies for Circular Water Cycles in Support of the Zero Pollution Action Plan” yesterday was a full success! It was attended by nearly 80 participants and by that warming up the audience for this year’s #WaterKnowledgeEurope2024. 💪 During our session, we pinpointed that #PFAS contamination isn’t just an environmental issue - it’s a multifaceted challenge affecting health, trust, and our economy. The #healthrisks are alarming, and the psychological stress it causes, coupled with a growing distrust in governments and industries, underscores the urgency of action. 💸 The economic impact? Significant. While remediation costs are high, the cost of inaction is even higher. Yet, blind spots remain—standardization, feasibility of solutions, and timely scientific input to policymakers are critical gaps we must address. 🚨 Another concerning issue is the pace of action. Scientists often wait too long to release the knowledge needed to drive solutions. Innovation loops, where industries adopt new methods, are urgently needed. 👏 A big thank you for our colleagues from the Life-Source project and SCENARIOS Project EU for being part of this event! 🌍Let’s keep the conversation going! What are your thoughts on tackling PFAS? Tell us in the comments! #zeropollution #sustainabiltity

📣New Position Paper on Accelerating the #PFAS Agenda: View of the EU Water Sector for Europe's Future. 🌍 The urgent need to address #PFAS - "forever chemicals"- is a priority of the new Ursula von der Leyen's Commission mandating Commissioner Jessika Roswall and Vice President Stéphane Séjourné to simplify reach and speed up work to provide clarity as soon as possible on PFAS. 💧Water Europe’s latest Position Paper stresses the view of the water sector in strengthening sustainable #competitiveness while safeguarding the environment and #publichealth from PFAS challenges. 🔍We outlined 9 key recommendations to guide Europe toward a Water-Smart Society that balances innovation, safety, and sustainability: ✅Develop uniform methods for PFAS #measurement and analysis across the EU. ✅Introduce an #obligation to provide information on the presence of knowingly added PFAS ✅Unroll the ECHA PFAS #restriction’ process ✅Require industrial sites producing or using PFAS to cap PFAS flow ✅Establish a health-based threshold for trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) ✅Introduce an Extended Producer Responsibility using a PFAS toxicity risk-based approach ✅#Finance research and innovation activities to find alternatives to PFAS uses as well as PFAS removal technologies ✅Establish a list of approved and best available #technologies for the safe management of PFAS concentrates ✅Balance the regulation of PFAS with the need for certain essential uses in production and essential functions in products, particularly for well-studied fluoropolymers of low concern with no evidence of health risks 📘Read the full Position Paper 👉 https://lnkd.in/eFyqYbs7 💡Want to delve deeper? In #PROMISCES, many #youngresearchers are working in a wide variety of fields. But one thing they have in common: To enable a #circulareconomy in the soil-sediment-water system and to fight #PFAS. 👩🔬 One of them is Alicia Cano López. She is a pre-doctoral researcher in the field of Environmental Analytical Chemistry at Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC). What excites her the most about the work in PROMISCES is the potential to contribute to significant environmental improvements and to provide solutions that can enhance the well-being of communities around the world. Read more about Alicia and her thoughts on PFAS in #reused #water in our interview! 👉 https://lnkd.in/dTB9pvN5 #zeropollution
