New Aerial Photos and Elevation Data for Statia Now Available. Recently, the aerial photos and elevation measurements taken of Statia in 2023 and 2024, for the first time, have become available in the Caribbean Netherlands Data Room. This data forms an important foundation for improving the registration of addresses and buildings on the island. However, the impact goes further.The data provides valuable insights that are essential for developing effective policies and appropriate regulations. By mapping cables, pipelines, and permits in detail, and offering insights for environmental h and market research, the government can make better-informed decisions. These improvements in policy and regulation contribute to good governance. Policy Advisor Kimani Watson from the Directorate of Environment, Nature, and Infrastructure (ENI), along with Nivea Spanner and Shardien Cyntje, policy workers from the Department of Finance, is attending the Green Overseas Finance Forum in Brussels from 7-11 October 2024. The forum will provide a platform for attendees to share the challenges experienced when trying to access climate finance. Statia, along with the other 24 Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs), is unable to access global climate finance sources due to its ties with the EU and the UK. The Statia government has signed an agreement with a major airline investor, marking an important step towards improving air travel to the island. This partnership aims to create new flight routes and offer cheaper flights to and from Statia. These changes will make it easier for tourists to visit the island and help local people travel more affordably. With more flights expected, the Statia government hopes this initiative to boost tourism on the island, grow the local economy, and create new opportunities for island businesses. On Monday 9 September 2024 members of the Statia Disaster Committee visited the HNLMS Pelikaan, a Royal Netherlands Navy logistics support vessel docked at Statia harbour. Lieutenant Commander Max Borsboom welcomed the committee and provided a comprehensive briefing on the ship's capabilities, including its role in disaster response and humanitarian aid in the Caribbean region. The committee toured key areas of the vessel, including the cargo hold, medical facilities, and bridge. Discussions focused on enhancing collaboration between Statia's disaster response efforts and the support provided by the Pelikaan. Lieutenant Commander Max Borsboom highlighted the ship's history of rapid response to regional emergencies and its close cooperation with local disaster management teams. This experience offered valuable insights for the Statia Disaster Committee as they continue to refine the island's emergency preparedness plans and strengthen ties with their naval partners.
