How could Trump’s new tariffs impact agriculture and manufacturing? Ag Econ professor Russell Hillberry and associate professor of economics Anson Soderbery share insights with the Purdue Exponent. Lafayette, home to major manufacturers like Caterpillar and Subaru, is heavily dependent on exports, so the new trade policies could raise costs and create economic uncertainty. Hillberry explains how tariffs affect local businesses, farmers, consumers and many industries that are caught in the shifting trade dynamics. "In the case of soybeans and other agricultural prices, prices may end up slightly cheaper for consumers, but the farmers growing the soybeans lose out on significant revenue, Hillberry said. On the other hand, with production costs increased, some manufactured goods may see a price increase." Farmers' adoption of improved crop varieties could increase yields in low-income countries. However, the presence of measurement error in household surveys poses a challenge to estimating true returns.
