Welcome to this month’s #EnzymeOfTheMonth! 🎉 Meet Rubisco, the superstar of photosynthesis! 🌱 This enzyme is essential for life on Earth, and it has some fascinating quirks. Let’s dive in! 🧵👇 🟢 #Rubisco (Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase) is the most abundant protein on Earth! 🌍 It’s found in all photosynthetic organisms, helping them convert CO2 into energy. But don’t let its abundance fool you, it’s also known as “the lazy enzyme” 💤 🟢 Why the nickname? Rubisco has a slow reaction rate, which means it doesn’t efficiently fix CO2. This inefficiency has led to evolution’s response: C4 plants! These plants have developed alternative pathways to capture carbon more effectively and thrive in hot climates 🌵. However, scientists want to reduce Rubisco’s laziness… 🟢 Optimising Rubisco’s efficiency, by increasing its ability to catch CO2, could create super-plants that grow faster and are more resistant to stress💪! This approach could increase crop productivity and allow a more sustainable agriculture ♻️ Learn more! ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/dByziRVr 🟢 From the foundations of photosynthesis to cutting-edge applications in agriculture, Rubisco is truly remarkable! 🌱 This is everything for now but you can leave a suggestion for next month’s enzyme! #RadicalZ
