As with each small business and nonprofit, there’s great diversity in web builders out there. And while we love Squarespace, we know it’s not for everyone. Sometimes you need a totally custom-coded design [we’ve got a few recs for that], sometimes you need more plug-ins than one can imagine, and other times powerful e-commerce features. A study by the Nielsen Norman Group revealed that only 16% of users read website text word for word. The rest? A staggering 79% of them just scan the page. So what does that mean for you? Your website's content needs to be optimized for scanning, not reading. We break down what this means, why it matters, and how you can make your website more engaging for your visitors in this article. #WebsiteDesign #WebsiteTips #WebsiteIdeas

The news is out: Pantone's Color of the Year 2025 is Mocha Mousse. 🤎 In my journalism days, I’d write an annual piece on this reveal with an interior design angle. But now as a website designer, I’ve put a new spin on how I celebrate this color announcement… I put together these mood boards to inspire website homepage mockups, color palettes, and font pairings that highlight the warmth, luxury, and harmony of Mocha Mousse. This was SO fun to play around with! Find the final website designs, HEX codes, and fonts here: https://lnkd.in/eEzeg96W

Accessibility is SO important. A lot of these tips are useful in website design as well. We thought we had a lot of this down, but some of these were still surprising! This is worth a read... #Accessibility #WebsiteDesign #DesignTips

I was today years old when I realised blind and partially-sighted people were unable to read my posts, or that I'm making it hard to do so. Embarrassingly, I've always prided myself on being inclusive. I started working with disabled people and wound up being CEO of a disability charity and even chaired the Council for Disabled Children. But... You don't know what you don't know until someone very kindly points one thing out (thanks, Robbie Crow!), which led me down a rabbithole of accessible discovery! So, here are the mistakes I've made so you can avoid them and make sure everyone can read your posts: • Fancy fonts in posts, such as bold or italic, can't be read by most accessibility features, so people using text to speech software don't hear that section of your post. • You can test this by selecting the text and using speech or voiceover to hear which parts are missing. • Emojis are described by a long code and a name. I used to place them at the start of lists, but that means the whole thing gets read before your text! • If you use emojis in place of text, some readers skip the word and read the code. For example, Merry 🎅 becomes Merry U+1F385 FATHER CHRISTMAS. • So, whilst emojis look pretty to those of us who can see them, it's better to use them sparingly, or put them at the end of your post and avoid emoji groups. • Most people don't put alt-text on images. This is one thing I was getting right, to be fair! Describe the image to someone who can't see it; I’ve seen people use it to make jokes about the image but not describe it?! • eg: Don't say "Steve is wearing a silly Christmas jumper", say "A middle-aged white man with greying stubble is wearing a red wooly jumper with an image of Rudolph, a reindeer with brown antlers and a big, shiny red nose. • In text images, like quotes, some colours don't contrast well, which makes them hard to read. There are free websites you can use to check contrast. • EDIT: Forgot to mention words in hashtags should be capitalised, they call it #CamelCase, otherwise hashtags are read as a jumble of letters. So, I'm no expert, but these are just a few of the things I'm trying to do to make sure my posts are accessible. I'd encourage you to do the same and I'm interested to hear any other helpful accessibility tips you've got? #LinkedIn #Accessibility #Inclusion

Where do you find inspiration? I'm a website designer, but that doesn't mean all of my inspiration comes from scouring the internet. Honestly, how boring would that be? I find inspiration everywhere — museums, art exhibitions, books, being outside in nature... that's color and copy right there! What inspires you? #websitedesign #inspiration #creativeinspiration

Even if you’ve got a website that looks mind-blowing on a laptop or desktop PC and has been designed around a best in class user experience, if that same website doesn’t match up when viewed on a mobile device, you could be losing out on business. #WebsiteDesign #WebsiteDesignTips #UserFriendly #Squarespace #LongIslandBusiness
