📢 Report Launch! Our latest report on Economic Sustainability of the RESCHOOL Pilot Communities in Amsterdam, Athens, the surroundings of Girona and Stockholm is out! As such, the RESCHOOL project implements EU climate and energy policies through collective and renewable energy actions that are driven by local communities and citizens, leveraging social innovation that enhances better energy behaviour and puts people, especially younger generations, into the center of Europe’s transition to net-zero. In parallel, technology advancement fosters market and system integration of our pilot communities, through optimized energy management, the provision of flexibility, modeling and forecasting services. However, like many emerging energy communities across Europe, the RESCHOOL pilots are facing significant financial, regulatory, and administrative barriers that challenge their economic sustainability and growth. Public support through grants, subsidies, and other mechanisms remain crucial to their viability. This new RESCHOOL report aims to: - Explore the drivers and barriers impacting the economic sustainability of energy communities in Europe, incl. with regard to energy market designs, local flexibility markets, self-consumption and network tariffs - Highlight available and potential revenue streams for community energy initiatives. - Demonstrate that stronger political support and reforms at local and national levels to unlock their full potential is required. Energy communities play a pivotal role in Europe’s decarbonisation: The report helps stakeholders in government, industry, academia, and civil society to take informed decisions for building a more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable energy future. The main objective of RESCHOOL is to catalase the creating of, growth, and management of energy communities
About us
The RESCHOOL project aims to increase the active participation of communities in energy markets, enhancing and facilitating the management and trading of flexibility in cooperation with sectoral players. The main objective of RESCHOOL is to catalyse the creation, growth and management of energy communities by leveraging the engagement of participants, facilitating the cooperation in collaborative initiatives within communities, and co-producing tools that enhance and facilitate the collective participation of citizens in the energy system and the relationship with other stakeholders, aggregators, or other energy communities. The developed tools will be validated in 4 pilots spanning Europe (Spain, the Netherlands, Sweden and Greece); social tools based on collaboration and gamification (the process of adding game-like elements to a non-game activity, so that people are encouraged to complete tasks or interact) and technological tools that will facilitate and automate the interaction with third parties in the energy value chain. The RESCHOOL project consortium brings together 16 partners from 7 European countries. The project has received funding from the European Union, GA 101096490. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union. Grids matter — renewables demand it: promoting an accelerated and coordinated expansion of renewables and grids is indispensable to ensure Europe meets its 2030/2050 renewable energy targets. EREF has submitted its input to the Commission’s targeted consultation on for Guidance on implementing dedicated grid areas under. Article 15(e) of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) and the Grid Action Plan. By streamlining permitting processes for grid and storage infrastructure, it aims to accelerate the deployment of renewables and ensure alignment with the EU’s 2030 and 2050 climate targets. A robust framework for grid infrastructure is essential to integrating renewable energy sources and advancing the energy transition. This requires coordinated efforts to accelerate renewable energy projects, overcome permitting barriers, and foster investment in grid expansion. As Florian Maringer (CEO of the Austrian Wind Energy Association IG Windkraft, an EREF member) notes: "In order to achieve the EU's 2030 and 2050 renewable energy targets, it is necessary to think the energy transition comprehensively and actively promote both the expansion of renewable energy and grid expansion together but with a high pace. Standardised, stable framework conditions at national and European level bring investments as well as legal certainty and are long overdue.” EREF welcomes the Commission’s initiative and emphasises that dedicated grid areas must remain strictly reserved for renewable energy grid capacities and storage projects. Diverting these areas for fossil fuels or non-renewable energy would risks delaying the energy transition and jeopardising the EU’s climate neutrality objectives. To ensure the effective implementation of dedicated grid areas, EREF highlights key priorities: - Alignment with national plans: Grid areas must integrate seamlessly into existing renewable energy strategies and spatial planning. - Full utilisation of grid capacity: These areas must remain reserved for renewable energy and storage, avoiding diversion to fossil fuels. - Streamlined processes: Clear legal frameworks, time-bound targets, and harmonised permitting are essential to accelerate deployment. - Stakeholder engagement: Early collaboration between authorities, developers, and communities builds trust and enhances project success. - Digitalisation and innovation: Centralised tools and shared grid connection points can optimise grid usage and efficiency. For more details, read EREF’s full consultation response through the link in the comments. #grids #renewables #acceleration
