🕯️ In Memoriam: Owen J. Lynch (1953–2024) Today we remember Owen, a former RRI Fellow and early champion of the rights of Indigenous Peoples + local communities. Owen was a pioneer in the land rights movement and dedicated his career to helping legally recognize community rights, particularly in the Philippines where he spent time in the 1980s as a Peace Corps volunteer. One of Owen’s favorite sayings was, “It’s better to light a flame than to curse the darkness.” He lived by this truth and inspired many to light their own flames and fight the darkness. ❤️ Andy White, Janis Alcorn, and Tony La Viña have written a beautiful remembrance of his life and legacy. Owen, you will be dearly missed. https://lnkd.in/gfhnf8nq

Young Indigenous leaders, like Sabba Rani Maharjan from #Nepal, are emerging as strong advocates for the next generation of local stewards of forests and other ecosystems. They are now actively engaging in global spaces like #COP29 to make themselves heard, and their voices should be an integral part of climate and conservation finance sector. #ThePledgeWeWant must include Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and local community youth! #DidYouKnow: Investment in #GenderEquality is declining in overall climate and conservation finance? Indigenous, local community, and Afro-descendant women’s rights organizations receive less than 1% of official development funding to address climate change. These women have historically been excluded from the design and implementation of funding that affects them. As donors move to scale up funding for locally led climate action, they must prioritize fit-for-purpose funding for local women’s organizations! That is #ThePledgeWeWant. In 2020, it was projected that at least USD 10 billion in new funding for the recognition of collective tenure rights and forest guardianship would be needed by 2030 to achieve global #climate and #biodiversity goals. Now, new data released at #COP29 shows that if current trends continue, we’re still off track by nearly USD 5 billion. A new brief from Rainforest Foundation Norway and RRI, drawing on the Path to Scale Funding Dashboard, shows that while overall funding continues to increase for Indigenous and local communities, it’s still well below the estimated resources needed to achieve crucial global goals! That is why we are calling for #ThePledgeWeWant to support Indigenous Peoples’, Afro-descendant Peoples’, and local communities’ tenure rights and forest guardianship! Read more: www.thepledgewewant.com Check out the brief for new data + examples of how direct funding enables communities to make a difference on the ground—from the Pygmy Peoples in the DRC to Indigenous Peoples Voluntary Isolation in Peru. How can donors deliver #ThePledgeWeWant for Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and Afro-descendant Peoples helping to fight climate change? ✅ They should start by learning how their peers are fulfilling their commitments or accelerating direct funding to Iocal rightsholders. ✅ They should also ease coordination, reduce duplication, and adapt more transparent approaches about where and how they are making progress. The Pledge We Want is about incorporating lessons learned from communities on the ground into new funding pledges! #WATCH: A powerful new documentary highlights RRI’s project in Gabon, supported by its CLARIFI funding mechanism, and its innovative approach to rights-based #conservation. The film shows how Indigenous Peoples and local communities can protect ecosystems and store carbon without relying on traditional protected areas. It delves into the efforts and achievements of the #Massaha community, who, with support from the Nsombou Abalghe-Dzal Association (#NADA), successfully advocated for the right to protect their ancestral forest. Their resilience and leadership are proof that community-led conservation, especially with participation of women, can drive real change for both people and the planet. This work is advancing the global goal of 30% nature conservation by 2030, showing that local communities, particularly women, are central to a sustainable future. 🌱 Watch by clicking below! https://lnkd.in/erKWXEpT #REPALEAC, #IfNotUsThenWho, Global Alliance of Territorial Communities, Bezos Earth Fund

#DidYouknow? ℹ️ Even though funding for Indigenous Peoples’ and local communities’ rights, and climate + conservation projects have gone up by 36% between 2020 and 2023—at about USD 517 million/year—there is still no systematic change in direct donor funding to these rightsholders’ own organizations. ℹ️ In fact, most local organizations still get funding indirectly through NGOs and conservation organizations. Their direct funding comes largely via small grant schemes. #ThePledgeWeWant is a global campaign that seeks to change this trend, and help donors move more funding into the hands of rightsholders.
