The EU deforestation law won't make your chocolate unaffordable. And it won't cost companies a fortune to comply with. A first-of-its-kind report by Profundo sets the record straight on how much it will really cost to tackle deforestation in EU supply chains: Only 0.1% of company revenues. This is how much is needed on average to set up, run and report on the supply chain due diligence systems that will make sure the products we buy in the EU are deforestation-free. Would you be willing to pay less than 1 cent more on your 2-euro chocolate to save the world’s forests? Most consumers wouldn’t think twice, especially when compared to the cost of losing our remaining forests and the irreplaceable biodiversity they shelter. The bottom line? New supply chain laws like the EUDR do not pose any significant cost trade-off with sustainability objectives. We can save forests and have our chocolate (and coffee) too, if we implement the EU deforestation law now. Check out the study for yourself: https://lnkd.in/evxF6uWr Manfred Weber Canfin, Pascal

Working with forest peoples to secure their rights
About us
Forest Peoples Programme supports the rights of peoples who live in forests and depend on them for their livelihoods. We work to create political space for forest peoples to secure their rights, control their lands and decide their own futures. Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) was founded in 1990 in response to the forest crisis, specifically to support indigenous forest peoples’ struggles to defend their lands and livelihoods. It registered as a non-governmental human rights Dutch Stichting in 1997, and then later, in 2000, as a UK charity, No. 1082158 and a company limited by guarantee (England & Wales) Reg. No. 3868836, with a registered office in the UK.

🚨🚨 Calling all defenders & climate activists - we need your help! 🚨🚨 If you are (or know) a land and environment defender and/or climate activist who is active online, we want to hear from you 📣 🌍 What: We are running the first ever global survey into the experiences of land and environmental defenders and/or climate activists online, including hate and harassment. It takes 10-15 minutes to complete. ❓ Why: The results of this survey will be used to better understand the issues facing defenders and activists, fight for stronger protections, help create safer spaces online, and hold tech companies to account. 🙋 Who: We define defenders and activists as anyone who actively protects their home, the environment and/or the climate. It is a broad definition, and participation in the survey is self-selecting. 🦺 How: We recognise the heightened risks defenders and activists face, so we have taken steps to keep this survey and its results anonymous and secure. Our privacy policy describes how and why we may use personal information and how we protect privacy and rights regarding this information. Survation, who hosts the survey, will not be using the data collected for any other purposes, and has agreed to delete all collected data after providing it to our investigators. We appreciate participants may find some topics sensitive or distressing and there are ‘Prefer not to say’ options where appropriate throughout the survey. 💻 Where: Online. We have developed different links to the survey for different regions. Please pick the one that is best for you! The Enggano people of Indonesia are actively seeking official recognition as an #IndigenousPeople (masyarakat hukum adat) to safeguard their ancestral lands, marine resources, and cultural heritage. In our latest report, we explore their journey to secure recognition, taking a closer look at their history, culture, and the steps they’re taking to protect their future. Learn more about the Enggano people here: https://lnkd.in/efG4wXfR Since 2015, with support from the national Indigenous peoples’ alliance (AMAN – Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara), the Enggano have been making claims to their lands. Although political changes slowed progress, renewed efforts since 2022, backed by the Akar Foundation, have resulted in the registration of their claim with the local provincial government in Bengkulu. Additionally, with support from Forest Peoples Programme (FPP) and the Akar Foundation, the Enggano are drafting a trilingual Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) Protocol. This ensures that future decisions impacting their land are made transparently and in full consultation with their community. The Enggano’s efforts go beyond recognition—they aim to preserve their rich cultural traditions, protect vital natural resources, and foster sustainable development on their island and the surrounding seas. #IndigenousPeoples #FPIC #LandRights #HumanRights #CommunityLedConservation #SustainableUse #Indonesia

In November 2024, a cross regional delegation of Indigenous, Afro-descendant and local community representatives spoke about corporate accountability at an All-Party Parliamentary Group on Human Rights event, chaired by Fabian Hamilton, MP. The delegation highlighted: ⚫ Human rights and environmental violations connected to UK businesses and financial institutions, including from the agribusiness, mining and oil and gas sectors. ⚫The need for the UK to recognise collective human rights, including to land, as well as individual human rights. ⚫Mandatory obligations on UK businesses and financial institutions to respect human rights and the environment, including requirements to remedy actual harms and enable access to justice. ⚫The potential for Official Development Assistance to support in-country corporate accountability measures. ⚫They urged UK policymakers to take decisive action in the UK and to support robust corporate accountability initiatives globally. Today is the World Day for African and Afrodescendant Culture! Did you know that at COP16 in Cali, Colombia, the critical role of Afrodescendant Peoples in biodiversity conservation was for the first time officially recognized? 💚✊🏿 Together with Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, Afrodescendants bring their own distinct knowledge to biodiversity conservation and ecosystems preservation. However, their lives and territories are under significant pressure. 📣 Our report 'The Green Illusion' reveals the deep impacts of sugarcane monoculture on biodiversity and Black communities' livelihoods in the Cauca River Valley. 🌿 Who are those responsible? Read more in 'The Green Illusion' ('No Todo lo Verde es Biodiverso'): https://lnkd.in/dHPawQj8 'The Green Illusion' was published by the Palenke Alto Cauca of the Black Communities Process (PCN), Enramada: spaces for action and Forest Peoples Programme. #Afrodescendants #Biodiversity #COP16 #Colombia #ForPeopleAndNature #NoTodoLoVerdeEsBiodiverso The Invisible Thread = TINTA = Rights and Resources Initiative International Land Coalition The International Land and Forest Tenure Facility
