Director of Data Platform @ Bookboost

The data movement (ETL, ELT, insert current buzzword here) space has grown rapidly over the past couple years. I thought the space was fragmented pre-2020 but the fragmentation today is extreme. Some context, we've been working on a new feature set at Bookboost which requires sub-second latency data movement between PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch primarily (with other destinations thrown in for good measure). I tend to think that I'm in the know when it comes to the options for both open-source and managed solutions in the data space, but boy oh boy, was I in for a shock when we started experimenting with pipeline options. Some of my notes: 🪶 Apache ecosystem The go-to enterprise data movement ecosystem continues to lead the market. The Apache Software Foundation's Kafka, Spark, NiFi, Flink, Beam amongst others provide a myriad of solutions for high volume data movement if you have the time/team to manage the solution. There are many managed solutions such as Decodable (managed Apache Flink), but for us, the complexity of the underlying technology made this option a no-go. 🧮 Managed/self-hosted change-data-capture (CDC) This is approach has really grown in popularity in recent years with the ever-increasing volume of data in source databases growing (and those databases being resourced constrained in most cases). Debezium (OS, self-hosted) has been the leading CDC tool set for quite some time, but the hosting the solution has been a barrier for most smaller data teams. In recent times, we have seen the household batch processing names (ie. Fivetran, Airbyte, etc) releasing managed CDC offerings - however, the pricing structures feel like they haven't quite figured out the value proposition yet. Then, we have seen the rise of platforms such as RisingWave, Estuary and Materialize who offer a managed CDC solution with a pricing structure to match (ie. compute-based instead of volume of rows/GBs). 🛠️ Managed batch processing The likes of Fivetran, Airbyte, Matillion, etc continue to drive the dominance of business system data extraction to a data warehouse destination, but seem less suited to handling the scale of moving data from a transactional database to the data warehouse, especially if you're looking for a cost-effective solution. This brings me to the solutions that I have really enjoyed working with so far, Estuary and RisingWave. We have both of these platforms running at the moment with their own discreet workloads. As a small data team, the ease of use, flexibility and cost effectiveness of these two platforms definitely stand out. Keen to hear if there are any other solutions that we may have missed that I need to add to my to-play-with list. #datamovement #moreismore #datadataeverywhere

  • 🤔 Curious why we ditched etcd for SQL to scale RisingWave's metadata? 🔑 Initially, RisingWave relied on etcd, a well-known distributed key-value store, as its meta store. But as adoption grew and users deployed larger, more complex clusters, etcd's limitations became clear. ⚡️ To overcome these challenges, we made the bold move to transition to a SQL-based backend for our meta store, powered by the robust OLTP database system: PostgreSQL. 💡 Want to know how we made it happen? Dive into Tianshuo Shi's blog to uncover the details: https://lnkd.in/gTWT9MMq #risingwave #etcd #postgresql #oltp

Founder @ RisingWave. Event-driven architecture, stream processing, databases, AI.

My first blog in 2025: why I switched from a pure database advocate to an AI advocate, and why i think all data infra engineers should learn AI? Let’s be realistic: today’s AI isn’t the deep learning hype from almost 10 years ago. It’s a completely new beast that’s changing how people extract knowledge from data! Some facts: 📗 Models can replace data storage. 📘 AI/ML inferences can replace precise computation. 📙 New AI pipelines can cut down or even eliminate some feature engineering workloads. Don’t be shocked if text-to-SQL and vector databases become commodities. Every data infra company has to start thinking about how AI fits into their story. Here’s what we’re working on at RisingWave: 🥇 Embedded UDFs (way more lightweight than hosted UDF services!) 🥈 Enhanced Python SDK (better DataFrame-style computation!) 🥉 Enhanced data-serving capabilities (cheaper than Redis!) 2025 is the year AI hits data infra hard. Mark my words—let’s see where this goes! https://lnkd.in/gacVAYFG
